HANCOCK COUNTY — A Fortville man accused of multiple felony crimes, including threatening a county woman with a gun, had his case settled via plea agreement in Hancock County Circuit Court late last week.

David Taylor Medcalf, 42, was originally charged with a Level 3 felony count of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony count of intimidation, a Level 6 felony count of domestic battery, a Level 6 felony count of pointing a firearm, a Level 6 felony count of strangulation and two misdemeanors.

The plea deal dismissed five of the seven charges, including the most serious charge. Medcalf admitted guilt to the the Level 5 charge and the Level 6 domestic battery charge. Judge Scott Sirk gave Medcalf a 5-year term at the Indiana Department of Corrections for the Level 5 charge to run consecutive to a 2-year term for the Level 6 charge.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Medcalf became violent with a woman on the evening of Feb. 25, 2021, at his home in Fortville, throwing her in a bathtub and stepping on her throat. The woman tried to escape, she told police, but was pulled by her hair back into the residence. Medcalf also broke the woman’s phone when she tried to call 911 and pointed a gun at her and himself during the altercation, officials said.

Medcalf was arrested the next day. The woman was treated for bruises and other injuries. Court records show Judge Sirk also put a protective order in place for the woman for the executed and probation portions of the sentence.
