Superintendent Dr. George Philhower officiated a wedding of the letters Q and U before Eastern Hancock first graders.

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Q and U are forever united, Eastern Hancock first graders learned in a special lesson in September.

A wedding celebration marked the unity of the letters that love to be together.

Children enjoyed a ceremony officiated by Superintendent Dr. George Philhower, along with cupcakes, bubbles and dancing.

Marcus Redick, director of grants, held the letter Q and Jenny Toth, director of employee experience, held the letter U.

Eastern Hancock Elementary School Principal Amanda Pyle said this special lesson has been a tradition for about four years.

“The lesson behind the wedding is that Q and U are now officially inseparable, just like in words like ‘quick’ and ‘quiet,’” Pyle said in an email. “It was a celebration full of learning and fun as these two letters start their lifelong journey together!”

Staff members carried the letters Q and U down a red carpet as first graders congratulated the letter couple with bubbles.

A reception of cupcakes and dancing followed the wedding ceremony of the letters Q and U.
