Man on a motorized wheelchair killed in Fortville crash

A man is dead following an accident between a vehicle and motorized wheelchair in Fortville.

FORTVILLE — A man in a motorized wheelchair who appeared to be crossing the road is dead following a single-vehicle crash late Monday evening in Fortville.

Officials from the Fortville Police Department say at approximately 7:56 p.m. Sept. 30, members of the Fortville Police Department were called to the area of North Madison Street and Illinois Street (south of Strough’s Market) in Fortville due to the crash.

When officers arrived on scene, they called for the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team (F.A.C.Team) to respond due to the severity of the accident.

Officials say the crash involved a 2014 Nissan Rogue and a motorized wheelchair., and the man was pronounced deceased on scene.

The female driver of the Nissan was transported by ambulance to Hancock Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials said the Nissan was traveling southbound on North Madison Street. The man on the wheelchair was in the middle of the intersection of North Madison Street and Illinois Street. From evidence on scene, officials say it appears the Nissan struck the pedestrian in the middle of the intersection.

Officials investigating the evidence say the female driver has cooperated with the crash investigation and provided statements. The driver of the Nissan was wearing a seat belt during the crash. At this time, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, however the investigation is ongoing, officials said.

The names of the deceased and the driver have not been released yet. When released, the Daily Reporter will update the story.

The area of North Madison Street between Illinois Street and Monroe Street was closed for about two hours while officers from the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team investigated. Members of the Fortville Police Department, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, McCordsville Police Department, Vernon Township Fire Department, and Pendleton Fire Department all assisted on scene.
