Fall break programs available with reading dogs

GREENFIELD – Bentley’s Buddies and Friends will host programs during fall break, using books and reading therapy dogs to help children with literacy.

Sit, Stay, Read Fall Camp is Oct. 7-10. Programs on Oct. 7 and 8 are for children in third grade and up, while programs Oct. 9 and 10 are for those in grades kindergarten through second. Program themes range from cooking to animal care to engineering. Bentley’s Place is located at 108 N. State St., Greenfield. MV to welcome Realtors to event

FORTVILLE – Realtors and builders in the area are invited to a special breakfast at 9 a.m. this Wednesday, Oct. 2 to learn about Mt. Vernon schools.

The event will be at the MVCSC Administrative Service Center, 1806 W. Ind. 234, Fortville. Realtors can enjoy student entertainment, learn about MB’s enrollment and future growth plans, learn how MV schools can help Realtors sell their lots, and tour one of the schools. Parker to meet with residents

MT. COMFORT – Mt. Vernon Superintendent Dr. Jack Parker will be at a “Traveling Talk” event this Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Traveling talks is an opportunity for community members to talk directly with Parker and share their hopes, questions or concerns about MV schools in a casual setting. Participants can learn more about enrollment and the district’s growth plan.

The event will be at noon Oct. 2 at Ranchera Restaurant, 2806 N. 600W., Greenfield. No RSVP is necessary.

Casino-style event to raise support for EH teachers

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Support Eastern Hancock teachers in an upcoming casino-themed event.

The Eastern Hancock Education Foundation will host Monte Carlo Night from 6:30-10 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Hancock County Fairgrounds.

A reception and light appetizer stations with cash bar will be available from the start; gaming begins at 7 p.m.. Prize winners and an auction is at 9 p.m.

Cost is $40 per ticket, and sponsorship opportunities are available. The purpose of the foundation is to promote academic excellence by equipping teachers and inspiring students through financial contribution. EH alumni award nominations open

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Nominations are open for the 2025 Eastern Hancock High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

The award was founded to recognize and celebrate the positive accomplishments and contributions of Eastern Hancock High School alumni. Graduates of Eastern Hancock as well as Charlottesville, Westland, and Wilkinson High Schools are all eligible for consideration.

The Alumni Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have, through their performance, conduct, and achievement, brought credit and honor to themselves and EHHS. Their public example will hopefully serve to inspire future graduates to perform and serve in the same spirit.

Honorees will be recognized for outstanding achievement in their chosen field, leadership, the arts, and volunteer/community service. Nominees with outstanding records of achievement deserving of special recognition are eligible.

Children’s programs coming to libraries

GREENFIELD – Programs for children are coming up in October at local libraries.

The Hancock County Public Library in Greenfield will host Monster Bash for grades 2-5 is Oct. 16; a Minecraft game night Oct. 21; and a Mad Scientists program for ages 5-10 Oct. 24.

At the HCPL in New Palestine, a Gouls and Ghosts Dance Party is from 5-7 pm. Oct. 3; Pals and PJs for ages 3-7 is Oct. 9; Rhythm & Hues is Oct. 10; and Science Squad, Oct. 15.
