At his home course race, Eastern Hancock’s Preston Markley took the individual title in the 5K Gary Powers Memorial Cross Country Invitational Saturday.

Markley won the race in 17:22.53. The Royals finished third as a team with 90 points. Hagerstown won with 61. Wisdom Builders scored 71.

Following Markley for Eastern Hancock, Andrew Metz finished seventh in 19:04.16. Caden Powers placed 19th in 20:17.71.

Davis Decker (23:32.80) and Jud West (23:38.14) were 38th and 39th, respectively.

Eastern Hancock competes in the Heritage Days Classic at Hauser Saturday.

Marauders 3rd at Golden Bear

Mt. Vernon’s boys cross country team placed third in the Black Division 5K race at the Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational Saturday at Blue River Memorial Park.

Northville (MI) won the race with 24 points. No. 6 Fishers finished second with 51, edging the ninth-ranked Marauders’ 55. Carmel was fourth with 118.

Fishers’ Sam Quagliaroli was the individual winner in 15:13.18.

Mt. Vernon had two runners in the top 10, led by Ahmed Saleh’s third-place finish in 15:46.85. Xaiden Jenson was eighth in 16:08.46.

Three other Marauders earned top 20 finishes. Brayden Strantz was 13th in 16:31.47. Landon Willis placed 15th in 16:32.04. Caden Cassada finished 16th in 16:41.74.

Mt. Vernon returns to the Shelbyville course Saturday for the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet.

Dragons 5th in Gold race

New Palestine’s boys cross country team placed fifth in the Gold Division 5K race in Saturday’s Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational at Blue River Memorial Park.

Roncalli won the meet with a score of 71. Wapahani edged Guerin Catholic 95-99 for second. Western was fourth with 101 and New Palestine scored 141.

Jacob Cooper was the top individual finisher for New Palestine. He placed 11th in 17:05.24.

Western’s Camden Raab won the race in 16:03.54.

For the Dragons, Gavin Smith (17:46.31) and Mike Bauer (17:46.52) placed 2oth and 21st, respectively.

Carson Cooper finished 42nd in 18:30.29. Gabe Silvey was 53rd in 18:47.95.

New Palestine returns to the Blue River course Saturday for the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet.

Cougars 9th at Carmel

Greenfield-Central’s boys cross country team finished ninth in the Riverview Health Flatrock Invitational at Northview Church in Carmel Saturday.

The Cougars had a total of 229 points. Homestead won with 47. Hamilton Southeastern was a close second with 52.

Clinton Prairie’s Hayden Kemple was the individual champion on the 5K course with a time of 15:33.62.

For the Cougars, Bryce Cotterman led the way with a 32nd place finish in 16:41.89. David Wasson was 50th in 17:07.65. Peter Hummel was close behind his teammate with a 52nd-place finished in 17:10.69.

John Wait finished 60th in 17:15.10. Henry Rahe was 71st in 17:30.27.

Greenfield-Central travels to Shelbyville’s Blue River Park for the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet on Saturday.

Girls cross country

Johnson wins invitational

Eastern Hancock’s Sydney Johnson won the 5K Gary Powers Memorial Cross Country Invitational on her home course at Eastern Hancock Saturday.

Johnson won the race in 21:26.29. Kaylee Swan was seventh in 24:46.82 and Riley Williams was 26th in 40:32.45.

Only two teams had enough runners for team scores. Wisdom Builders won the team event with 26 points. Hagerstown had 29.

Eastern Hancock competes in the Heritage Days Classic at Hauser Saturday.

Kinnaman has strong time at Flatrock

Greenfield-Central’s Josie Kinnaman ran a 5K time of 19:13.18 and the Cougars girls cross country team finished 15th in the Riverview Health Flatrock Invitational at Northview Church in Carmel Saturday.

Kinnaman placed 25th.

Following Kinnaman for the Cougars, Adalyn Cole finished 74th in 20:47.69, Kendall Barrett was 97th in 21:17.01, Lexie Copeland placed 106th in 21:24.83 and Taylor Cooksey crossed the line in 149th with a time of 22:53.34.

Holland West Ottawa (MI) won the meet with 54 points. Carmel was second with 72.

Helen Sachs, from Holland, won the race in 16:57.37.

Mt. Vernon places 4th

Mt. Vernon’s girls cross country team finished fourth in the Black Division 5K race in the Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational at Blue River Memorial Park Saturday.

Fishers won with 18 points. Avon had 52. Franklin Central finished just ahead of the Marauders with 90 points. Mt. Vernon scored 95.

Fishers’ Abby Lotter was the individual winner in 19:11.34.

Mt. Vernon had three runners in the top 20. Hannah Hauser led the way with a 13th-place finish in 21:23.61. Chesnie Willis was 18th in 21:31.94. Lillian Quinn was right behind her in 19th with a time of 21:32.29.

Emma Gale placed 30th in 22:48.34. Mikella Rentfrow was 34th in 23:12.46.

Mt. Vernon runs the course again this Saturday in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet.

Dragons 9th in Gold Race

New Palestine’s girls cross country team finished in ninth place in the Gold Division 5K race at Saturday’s Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational held at Blue River Memorial Park.

Guerin Catholic won with 74 points. Hamilton Heights was close behind with 77 New Palestine scored 208.

Taylor Burke led New Palestine runners with a time of 21:23.95, good enough for 22nd place.

Taylor Stone finished in 43rd place with a time of 22:34.88. Heidi Bloomer completed the race in 50th place, clocking in at 22:57.17. Bri Journay was 55th in 23:18.32 and McKenzie Hacker placed 59th in 23:30.01.

Ava Shirley of Roncalli won the race in 19:31.0.

The Dragons return to the Blue River course Saturday to run in the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet.

Boys soccer

Marauders go 1-1 at Classic

Mt. Vernon’s boys soccer team went 1-1 in matches at the Marauder Classic at Mt. Vernon High School Saturday.

Mt. Vernon defeated Oak Hill 3-0 and lost to Class 3A No. 16 Crown Point 3-1.

Against Oak Hill, Charlie Cole scored two goals and Luka Alka had the other. Brady Webber and Antonio Reske had assists.

Will Keppler had eight saves and Joe Buchanan had two.

Versus Crown Point, Colby Smith had Mt. Vernon’s goal. Keppler had eight saves and Buchanan recorded three.

Mt. Vernon (8-3-1, 6-0) can clinch the Hoosier Heritage Conference title Thursday in a home match with Pendleton Heights (8-2, 3-0).

Dragons beat Delta

New Palestine’s boys soccer team scored twice in overtime and defeated visiting Delta 4-2 Saturday.

Paxton Holmes scored two goals in regulation and finished with a hat trick.

Noah Diaz de Leon had a pair of assists, one in regulation and one in overtime. Cole Christopher scored an extra-session PK for the other New Pal goal.

The Dragons are 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the HHC. Delta dropped to 7-5 and 3-4.

New Palestine plays Thursday at 3A No. 12 Carmel (3-3-2).

Girls volleyball

Mt. Vernon splits invite matches

Mt. Vernon’s girls volleyball team went 1-1 in two very competitive matches at Saturday’s Zionsville Invitational.

The Marauders (12-6) lost 3-1 to host Zionsville (10-9) by set scores of 31-29, 25-18, 14-25, 26-24.

They came back to beat Harrison (13-10) 3-2 by set scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9.

Against Zionsville, Avery Delello had 30 digs, Aubry Dowling and Sierra Holverson each had 14 and Ava Whitmore and Makenna Thompson totaled 11 each.

Alivia Morgan had five blocks and Jasmine Henderson recorded four.

Offensively, Holverson and Henderson had 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Jaycee Jones and Morgan both had 10.

Holverson added five service aces and Dowling had four.

Whitmore had 41 assists.

In the victory over Harrison, five players had double figures in kills.

Morgan led with 15. Holverson had 14. Olivia Johnson and Jones each had 11 and Henderson totaled 10.

Johnson had eight blocks, including six solos. Morgan had six blocks and Jones added five.

Holverson led in digs with 26 and Delello had 23. Thompson finished with 14 digs.

Delello had two service aces.

Whitmore had 51 assists.

Mt. Vernon hosts Westfield (13-5) Monday.

Girls soccer

Dragons lose to state-ranked Irish

New Palestine’s girls soccer team lost a road match 1-0 to Class 3A No. 8 Cathedral Saturday.

The Irish scored in the game’s first five minutes.

New Palestine dropped to 8-4. Cathedral improved to 8-3-2.

The Dragons travel to Franklin (4-5-1) Monday.
