Fall into fun: October features festivals, family events across Hancock County

GREENFIELD — Autumn is in full swing this October with pumpkins, peddlers, treats and tricks springing up across Hancock County.

Oct. 3-6: The Riley Festival returns to downtown Greenfield Oct. 3-6, celebrating the birthday of Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley with parades, carnival-style food, vendors and contests. This year’s theme poem is “A Barefoot Boy.” For details, visit rileyfestival.com.

Oct. 12: Vernon Township Public Safety Day will feature touch-a-truck, vendors, helicopter, vehicle extrication demo and a kids zone. The event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at Station 431, 600 Vitality Drive, Fortville.

Oct. 16: Kids in grades 2-5 can celebrate Halloween a little early with a Monster Bash at the Hancock County Public Library at 3 p.m. Oct. 16. Come in kid-friendly Halloween costumes for activities, including creating pet rock monsters. Register at hcplibrary.org.

Oct. 19: New Pal Harvest Fest returns noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 in downtown New Palestine. It features trunk or treat, chili tasting, a scarecrow stroll and Highland cows for photos and petting. Come dressed in a Halloween costume for family fun at 11 E. Main St., New Palestine.

Pumpkins and Peddlers in Shirley celebrates the fall season in the community on the Hancock/Henry line. The event is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 19 at Shirley Park and features food, entertainment, vendors, pumpkin decorating, a chili cook-off and more. Visit facebook.com/shirleyindiana for updates.

Buck Creek Township Fire Department will host Community Night Out from 2-6 p.m. Oct. 19. Expect a trunk or treat, live doll house burn, food, prizes and more at 5809 W. Airport Blvd., Greenfield.

Dogs can join in the Halloween fun at Rover’s Howl-O-Ween event from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 19 at Beckenholdt Park, 2770 N. Franklin St., Greenfield. The event will include a costume contest, dog park open house and the ribbon-cutting of Baker’s Rainbow Bridge.

Oct. 21: Boos & Brews is an adults-only event is from 4-10 p.m. Oct. 26 in downtown Greenfield. Drink and dine in the district starting at 4, and at 8 p.m. enjoy a beer garden and music by the Flying Toasters. Artisan craft vendors, live T-shirt printing and a costume contest will be on site at the Living Alley for the crowd ages 21 and older. Visit greenfieldmainstreet.org/events for $15 tickets.

Oct. 24: Trunk or Treat hosted by Greenfield Parks and Recreation will be 6-8 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Hancock County Fairgrounds, 620 Apple St., Greenfield. Local businesses and organizations that want to sign up as vendors can do so now by emailing [email protected].

Oct. 25: Tricks on Main brings families together for trick or treating with local downtown businesses in Greenfield. Set for 5-7 p.m. Oct. 25, the event along Main Street and the downtown Living Alley will conclude with a free movie of “Frankenweenie” at 7:30 p.m. the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts. Oct. 25-Oct. 31: Head to the grounds of the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home for the return of the Festival of Jack-o-Lanterns. Anyone can enter a carved pumpkin in the community display; it’s free to enter. Each pumpkin is numbered, and those who stroll through the exhibit vote on their favorite. Prizes are given for adult and child carvings. Stop by any evening between 7-9 p.m. to see the pumpkins glow, or visit during the day if you prefer.

Oct. 26: The disability community is invited to join in on some Halloween fun for all ages. Trunk or Treat and Monster Mash Dash is from 2-5 p.m. Oct. 26 at Developmental Disabilities Systems Inc., 5999 W. Memory Lane, Greenfield. The event is hosted by DDSi and Families United for Support and Encouragement (FUSE). It will include treats, bounce house, prizes for costumes, a chili dinner and more. Trunk ‘N Treat is from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at Mt. Comfort Church’s Philadelphia Campus, 2265 W. U.S. 40, Greenfield.

Oct. 27: McCordsville’s Trunk or Treat is 4-6 p.m. Oct. 27 at Outlook Christian Church, 6531 N. 600 W., McCordsville.

Oct. 29: Trunk or Treat is from 5:30-7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Greenfield Church of Christ, 1380 S. State St., Greenfield.
