Prep roundup: Marauders rally for five-set win at Cathedral

The Mt. Vernon girls volleyball team came back from a two-set deficit to defeat host Cathedral 3-2 on Monday.

The Marauders won by set scores of 15-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-10.

Outside hitter Sierra Holverson and setter Ava Whitmore each had double-doubles.

Holverson had a team-high 14 kills to go with 15 digs. Whitmore dished out 37 assists and had 10 digs to go with being part of five blocks.

Jaycee Jones had 13 kills. Aubrey Dowling had a team-best 22 digs. Alivia Morgan and Olivia Johnson were both part of five blocks. Emersyn Llewellyn had four service aces.

Dragons improve to 2-0

New Palestine’s volleyball team won its home opener over Connersville Monday.

The Dragons are 2-0 on the season after a 3-0 sweep. Set scores were 25-11, 25-9, 25-10.

Libero Azure Flagle had 16 digs and three service aces. Kyndra Monteith had seven digs. Setter Samantha Gooding had 25 assists.

A balanced attack was led by Hayden Ramsey with 10 kills. Josie Corbett added eight. Natalie Sevier had eight kills and six digs.

Caylee Brown and Grace Tippit had seven and six kills, respectively.

Royals win fifth straight

Eastern Hancock’s volleyball team has started the 2024 season with five straight victories.

After winning four times on Saturday to take the Morristown Opening Classic, the Royals picked up a 3-1 victory over North Decatur on Monday.

The Royals won by set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 25-17.

G-C drops to 1-1

Greenfield-Central’s volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season Monday.

The Cougars (1-1) lost 3-1 at Scecina. Set scores for the match were, 25-21, 14-25, 25-19, 25-21.

Boys tennis

Marauders shut out Centerville

Mt. Vernon opened its boys tennis season with a 5-0 victory over visiting Centerville Monday.

Manny Downs won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1. Gavin Weaver was the victor at No. 2 6-3, 6-1, and Tate Cougill won at No. 3 6-0, 6-2.

At No. 1 doubles, Max Orelup and Bryndan Wylie won 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, Ethan Erdos and Eli Muterspaugh won 6-1, 6-0.

Dragons win second match

New Palestine’s boys tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 5-0 victory at Greensburg Monday.

Arjomand Khokhar won the No. 1 singles matchup 6-0, 6-2. Joey McPike won 6-1, 6-4 and Brady Torzewski won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

In doubles play, the No. 1 group of Moses Haynes and Max Havel won 6-2, 6-1. Carson Rush and Luke Bartusek won at No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-4.

Girls soccer

Mt. Vernon beats state-ranked Chatard

Kylie Brandes scored a goal and assisted on the other in Mt. Vernon’s girls soccer team’s 2-0 victory over visiting Class 2A No. 6 Bishop Chatard Monday.

Greer Stamper had the other goal in the Marauders’ season-opening win.

Goalkeeper Ava Stephenson had six saves.

Brown gets hat-trick in New Pal win

Gabby Brown scored three goals to help lead New Palestine’s girls soccer team to a 6-3 victory at Mooresville Monday.

Tylar Whitaker added a goal and four assists. Rylee Hurst had a goal and an assist and Sydnee Frank scored a goal.

Cougars suffer close loss

Greenfield-Central’s girls soccer team lost a 4-3 decision to visiting Franklin Central Monday.

The Cougars (1-2) got two goals and an assist from freshman Aubrey Bush. Frosh Kinley Smith had the other Greenfield-Central goal.

Paige McCarley and Carly Means each had an assist.
