The list of wins and records keeps getting longer for Greenfield youth swimmer Gabriel Brown.
The eight-year old is winning races at record pace, and defeating swimmers in older age groups, too.
In the recent Indiana Age Group State Championships (Swimfest), Brown swam in the 10-and-under category. He was the first 8-year old to ever win a 10-and-under race, to podium in all eight of his events, and earn the overall High Point Award, accumulating 103 points in his events.
Held at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis July 11-14, Brown won the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2-minutes, 55.49 seconds, dropping six seconds from his personal best.
He was second in the 200 freestyle (2:33.51), 100 backstroke (1:19.74), 100 freestyle (1:10.61) and the 200 medley relay (2:36.80). Third-place finishes came in the 50 backstroke (37.18 seconds), 200 freestyle relay (2:15.72) and 100 breaststroke (1:35.95).
A student at Harris Elementary, Brown currently holds 17 unofficial state records for 8-and-under swimmers, including all six of his individual swims at Swimfest. He is ranked No. 3 among eight-year olds in the USA according to SwimmingRank.com.
“He’s having one of those year’s that we thought we could have, but never dreamed it would be like this,” Gabriel’s father, Devon Brown said.
Brown is swimming this week at the AAU Junior Olympics in North Carolina and, in August, will conclude his season competing for Team Indiana at the 14U Central Zones Championship in Fargo, North Dakota.
Gabriel’s older brother, Dominic Brown, represented Team Indiana at the 14U meet in 2023. He is a student at Greenfield Intermediate School.
