HANCOCK COUNTY — An Anderson woman is facing a felony drug charge as well as intoxication charges following a May 15 traffic accident.

Crystal Dawn Coffey, 50, 1700 block of West 11th Street, is facing a Level 4 felony count of possession of methamphetamine, a Class A misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated-endangerment and two Class C misdemeanor counts of intoxication and possession of paraphernalia charges.

Coffey was arrested May 16 and had her initial appearance in Hancock County Circuit Court on Thursday. A $5,000 cash bond was set, and court records show she is due back in court Thursday, June 27 for a pretrial hearing.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to the area of CR 1000E, and Ind. 109 for a crash after a single vehicle struck a tree.

The report stated that when the deputy arrived, Coffey was sitting on the ground holding her keys and refused to give her keys to the deputy, so the deputy grabbed them to keep her from leaving the area, which officials feared she might.

Coffey then began to nod off, the report stated, but firefighters said her vitals were good, which made officials feel she might be under some kind of influence.

A search of her vehicle, officials said in the report, revealed a glasses case with two plastic baggies inside of it that contained a crystal-like substance know to be consistent with methamphetamine. Officials also stated that they found a glass pipe with burnt residue inside of it, indicating drug use.

Officials also found an AR-type BB gun on the passenger-side back seat, and a camouflage muzzle-loader which had a led ball (bullet) ready to load in the car’s trunk. There was also a bag containing multiple small plastic baggies which officials noted is often used by people to put illegal drugs in.

Coffey was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis to be checked out, the report stated. She was unable to do sobriety tests at the scene, so a sample of her blood was taken after a warrant was signed, officials said in the report. Coffey was then eventually transported to the Hancock County Jail where she is currently listed as an inmate.
