CHARLOTTESVILLE – Spring break might be fun, but the day before may have had it beat.

Eastern Hancock Elementary School students took part in Global School Play Day March 22. This is the third year the school used puzzles, board games, building blocks, action figures, stuffies and more to celebrate the importance of play.

The worldwide movement began in 2015 by six educators who observed the diminishing opportunities for unstructured play and the increasing focus on standardized testing and academic pressures.

The idea is to let children explore their creativity, problem-solving skills and social interactions in a spontaneous environment.

Eastern Hancock’s social media page was filled with pictures of children taking full advantage of the day of fun – sometimes with teachers and staff joining right in.
