Friends of the Library seeks volunteers

GREENFIELD – Friends of the Library is seeking new members and volunteers that would like to assist with supporting the Hancock County Public Library and its special projects.

Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization that hosts regular book and media sales to raise money for free concerts and children’s events and support special library projects.

Volunteers are needed for book donation days. These are once a month on the second Saturday, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Volunteers will work a two-hour shift, collect donated items and put them in boxes by type: non-fiction, fiction, paperback, children’s, DVDs, CDs and others.

Volunteers are also needed for the four yearly book sales. This year the dates are March 6-11, May 15-20, August 14-19 and November 13-18. Volunteers are needed to help move books to the sale room, sort books into the proper sections, work a 2-hour shift during the sale. At the end of the sale, volunteers are needed to help box the remaining books and take them to a donation site in Greenfield.

Join the Friends of the Library and be eligible for the Friends only preview sale the evening before each sale. Membership forms are available at the Friends Book Store in Greenfield and New Palestine. It is also available to download from the library’s website https://hcplibrary.org/about/friends.htm.

Local families sought for exchange students

GREENFIELD – PAX Academic Exchange is seeking Hancock County families to host high school exchange students.

Students ages 15-18 arrive in the U.S. in August of the upcoming school year. They have studied English for at least three years and are motivated to learn more about the U.S. by attending high school and living with a host family. PAX students are eager to experience American activities like holidays, backyard barbecues, sporting events and family celebrations, according to a press release. They are covered by comprehensive medical insurance and have their own spending money for incidentals.

Volunteer host families provide PAX students with a bed, a quiet place to study, a seat at the dining table, a warm and supportive home environment, and encouragement to engage in everyday American life. All types of families are welcome to host, including single parents, young couples, retirees and parents with teenagers.

Founded in 1990, PAX is a not-for-profit educational organization. Each year more than 1,100 teens visit the U.S. as PAX exchange students.
