Greenfield-Central’s boys basketball team improved to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 70-50 victory over visiting New Castle Friday.
The 12 wins continue the team’s run on the best start in school history. The Cougars are ranked No. 8 in both the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll (all classifications) and the Associated Press Class 4A poll.
On Friday, Greenfield-Central built a double-digit lead by the end of the first quarter, 16-5. It grew after each stop. The Cougars led 32-17 at halftime and 52-24 heading into the final period.
Junior Braylon Mullins led the way with 26 points. Braden Robertson added 13 and Dallas Freeman scored 10.
Two other Cougars were close to double figures. Boston Willard had nine and Jake Hinton scored eight.
Greenfield-Central is back in action tonight hosting Eastern Hancock.
Marauders beat Marion
Mt. Vernon’s boys basketball team made it two wins in two nights.
After a big road win at Avon on Thursday, the Marauders defeated visiting Marion 57-42 Friday.
Four players scored in double figures and two players recorded double-doubles.
Junior Tanner Teschendorf had 20 rebounds to go with 11 points. Leading scorer Julien Smith, with 15 points, had 10 rebounds.
Charlie Cross hit four 3-pointers for 12 points and R’mani Wells added 10.
After dropping four of five games, Mt. Vernon has won two straight and improved its record to 8-6.
On Friday, the Marauders trailed by four, 13-9, heading into the second quarter. They outscored the Giants 16-8 in the second to lead 25-21 at the break. The lead grew to 43-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
Mt. Vernon is back in action Saturday Jan. 20, at home, against Hamilton Southeastern.
Girls basketball
Cougars defeat New Castle
Greenfield-Central’s girls basketball team won for the fourth straight time with a 65-33 Hoosier Heritage Conference victory over visiting New Castle Friday.
The Cougars are 14-4 overall and 4-1 in the HHC.
Greenfield-Central had eight players score and four reached double figures.
Brooklyn McConnell had three 3-pointers and a team-high 17 points. Freshman Izzy Silcox scored 14 points. Madison Sonsini and Chaney Brown had 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Sonsini also had nine rebounds.
Greenfield-Central is back in action tonight at Franklin Central.
