Co-champions of the Hoosier Heritage Conference this past season, Mt. Vernon and New Palestine girls soccer teams each had five players named to the All-HHC team.
Greenfield-Central had three players selected.
Hancock County players made up more than one-half of the 24-player team.
Along with the 13 player selections, New Palestine’s Erin Clark was named the HHC Coach of the Year.
Players selected from Clark’s team included seniors Allie Blum and Viv Miller and juniors Tylar Whitaker, Nevaeh Gebhart and Rylee Hurst. Mt. Vernon representatives included seniors Mattie Isger, Ellie Gawrys and Lily Muhlenkamp and juniors Reagan Britt and Kylie Brandes.
G-C was represented by seniors Kalyn Moss and Jessica Merritt and sophomore Paige McCarley.
Mt. Vernon and New Palestine each had 6-1 records in league play. Mt. Vernon was 10-5-1 overall and New Pal finished 10-7-1. They finished one game ahead of 5-2 Pendleton Heights (5-9-2). The Arabians were followed by Shelbyville (12-5, 4-3), Greenfield-Central (6-9-2, 3-4), Yorktown (12-6-1, 2-5), Delta (9-7-2, 2-5) and New Castle (1-12-3, 0-7).
Other individuals selected to the team included: Pendleton Heights — Lyza DeShong, Isabelle Phillips, Priscilla Barajas and Oliva Hart; Shelbyville — Ava Wilson and Cyanne St. Bernard; Yorktown — Nina Fischer and Harper Mitchell; Delta — Ruth Sherck, Aubree Jarrells, and Jordan Bunch.
County well-represented on HHC soccer squad
Eleven members from Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon and New Palestine boys soccer teams were selected to the 24-member All-Hoosier Heritage Conference team for the 2023 season.
Co-champions with Pendleton Heights, New Palestine had a county-best five players on the squad. Dragons named were seniors Elliott Canova, Andon Colclazier, Alex Richwine, Cohen Wintin and sophomore Paxton Holmes.
Both the Dragons and Arabians finished 6-1 in conference play. The Dragons were 9-9 overall. The Arabians finished 12-4-1.
Mt. Vernon placed third with a 5-2 league mark and 11-6 overall record.
The four Marauders selected to the group were juniors Colby Smith and Rylan Vinard and sophomores Charlie Cole and Shawn Houser.
Delta was fourth with a record of 4-3 in HHC contests and 9-7 overall. Both Greenfield-Central and Yorktown had 3-4 HHC record. The Cougars were 4-12 on the season. The Tigers finished 4-9-3.
G-C had two players on the team, senior Gavin Jack and junior Jordin Jones.
Rounding out the HHC standings, Shelbyville was 1-6 in the HHC and 3-14 overall. New Castle was 0-7 and 3-13-1.
Along with the county players, others on the team were: Pendleton Heights — Greyson Hovermale, Dylan John, Jack Weflen, Ethan Duncan, Ivan Landaverde and Lucas Mayer-Adams; Delta — Brayden Stanley, Samori McKell-Jeffers, Cooper Pierce; Yorktown — Riley Marvin, Ethan Guinn; Shelbyville — Aiden Helfer-Vazquez; New Castle — Andrew Christman.
Pendleton Heights’ Kyle Davy was named HHC Coach of the Year.
Five named to HHC volleyball team
Five Hancock County players were recently named to the All-Hoosier Heritage Conference volleyball team.
Mt. Vernon was represented by senior outside hitter Easton Wampler and junior setter Ava Whitmore. New Palestine selections included senior outside hitter Bella Brownfield and sophomore defensive specialist Azure Flagle. Greenfield-Central senior outside hitter Mya Grigsby was also among the 14 players selected to the team.
Other members were: Yorktown – Addi Applegate, Kynnadi Bell, Addi Rains and Charlotte Vinson; New Castle – Alaina Bowman, Lauren Wilson, and Ella Young. Delta – Emily Reno. Pendleton Heights – Mikala Ross.
Yorktown won the league with a 7-0 mark. The Tigers were 27-6 overall and sectional champions. New Castle was second at 5-2 and 26-9. The Trojans also won their sectional.
Mt. Vernon, New Palestine and Pendleton Heights all finished 4-3 in league play. New Pal was 26-6 overall. Mt. Vernon finished 17-16 and Pendleton Heights had a 19-13 record.
Greenfield-Central finished sixth at 3-4 in league matches and 22-8 overall.
Six of the eight teams finished the season over .500. Rounding out the HHC, Delta was 1-6 and 9-14. Shelbyville was 0-7 and 2-29.
Stephanie Bloom of Yorktown was selected the HHC Coach of the Year.
