Prep roundup: Marauders get HHC sweep over Bears

Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team improved to 4-2 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 3-0 sweep of Shelbyville Thursday.

The Marauders beat the Golden Bears by set scores of 25-20, 25-11, 27-25.

Sophia Damer had 10 kills, three service aces and three blocks. Easton Wampler had 12 kills and nine digs. Kate Ferguson added nine kills.

Setter Ava Whitmore had 33 assists and three service aces. Emma Rappe and Ainsley Baer each had eight digs.

Mt. Vernon is 13-11 overall. Shelbyville dropped to 2-22 and 0-6 in the HHC.

Mt. Vernon travels to Shenandoah Monday.

Dragons defeat Tigers

New Palestine’s volleyball team picked up its 19th win of the season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Triton Central (15-8) Thursday.

The Dragons (19-4) won by set scores of 25-10, 25-15, 25-4.

Libero Azure Flagle had four service aces and 13 digs. Bella Brownfield contributed 13 digs to go with a team-high eight kills. Setter Sam Gooding had 36 assists, and five digs.

Natalie Sevier had Rachel Burke each had seven kills. Burke also had an ace and a block. Nyla Lewis recorded six kills. Josie Corbett added five kills and an ace.

Hayden Ramsey and Mallory Green had four and two kills, respectively.

“We did a nice job taking care of our side tonight,” New Palestine coach Kelli Gabehart said. “We only made eight unforced errors the entire match and I am really proud of that. Sam set a balanced offense and put the girls in position to shine.”

New Palestine plays in the Richmond Invitational Saturday.

Cougars lose conference 5-setter

Greenfield-Central’s volleyball team lost a marathon Hoosier Heritage Conference five-setter at Pendleton Heights Thursday.

The Cougars lost by set scores of 25-19, 16-25, 15-25, 25-15, 16-14.

Greenfield-Central dropped to 19-6 overall and finish HHC play 3-4. Pendleton Heights improved to 18-11 and 4-3.

The Cougars host Fishers and Guerin Catholic Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Marauders finish sweep

In the completion from Wednesday’s sectional semifinal match, Mt. Vernon’s No. 1 doubles team of Robbie Moore and Matthew Jones defeated Eastern Hancock’s Bo Dixon and Myles Wennen in three sets Thursday.

Mt. Vernon had won four matches Wednesday, the win from the doubles team completed a 5-0 sweep.

On Wednesday, the Royals won the first set 7-6 (7-5). The Marauders took the second 6-4. Eastern Hancock was leading 1-0 in the third when the match was stopped.

On Thursday, Moore and Jones won the final set 6-4.

Mt. Vernon plays Greenfield-Central at 4:30 p.m. Friday for the sectional title.

Girls soccer

G-C falls to Heritage Christian

Greenfield-Central dropped a 5-0 decision to Heritage Christian Thursday.

The Cougars dropped to 5-8-2. The Eagles improved to 9-7.

Greenfield-Central plays Richmond 7 p.m. next Thursday in a semifinal match of the Shelbyville Sectional.

New Pal leads New Castle

In a game suspended due to weather on Wednesday, New Palestine’s girls soccer team leads New Castle 4-0.

Ashlyn Sanford, Tylar Whitaker, Vivian Miller and Rylee Hurst scored goals for the Dragons.

A date to continue the match has not been announced.

Marauders tie HSE

On Wednesday, the 19th-ranked Mt. Vernon girls soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with second-ranked Hamilton Southeastern at Mt. Vernon High School.

Mt. Vernon plays No. 9 East Central Tuesday at Shelbyville High School in a first-round sectional match.

Boys soccer

Cougars win home finale

Greenfield-Central’s boys soccer team defeated New Castle 2-0 Thursday in the final game of the regular season at the G-C Soccer Complex.

Gavin Jack and Andrew Martin had goals for the Cougars. Jake Oakley had an assist, while Jordin Jones recorded the shutout.

Greenfield-Central opens play in the New Palestine Sectional with a 6 p.m. match Monday against Connersville.

Mt. Vernon defeats Rushville

Mt. Vernon’s boys soccer team finished the regular season with a 10-1 victory over Rushville Thursday.

Charlie Cole scored five times and Luke Alka added three goals. Drew Lynch and Shawn Houser also scored.

Brady Webber had three assists and Lynch contributed two. Other assists were by Nick Heitman, Zane Kaminski, Xander Sokol and Houser.

Mt. Vernon (10-5) takes on Richmond at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a first-round game of the New Palestine Sectional.
