MILAN — Each of the last two seasons, the matchup between Eastern Hancock and Milan had been decided by one score, and each time the road team won.

Last year, Milan won 36-35 in overtime at Eastern Hancock, and in 2021, the Royals traveled to Milan and knocked off the Indians 26-24.

This time around, neither of those things came to fruition as the Royals let an early 12-7 lead slip away for a 44-19 loss.

Eastern Hancock opened the scoring on a 6-yard Mark Kube touchdown run early in the first quarter, but Milan answered right back with a score of its own.

Later in the opening quarter, Royals quarterback Elijah Edon hit Cameron Volz for a 21-yard touchdown for a 12-7 lead.

A 60-yard run by Mason Green on the Indians next play from scrimmage set them up for the go-ahead score. Quarterback Wyatt Marsh connected with Ethan Pierce for the 14-yard touchdown.

The Indians scored the next 16 points of the half to take a 30-12 lead into the break.

The Royals cut into the lead early in the third quarter on a 63-yard touchdown strike from Edon to Dylan Bowman, but after the score, the offense stalled against a tough Milan defense that had allowed just 13 points over its last two games.

With the loss, the Royals dropped to 3-3 on the season. They host Monroe Central next Friday at 7 p.m.
