Mt. Vernon’s girls golf team shot a season-low, nine-hole round of 171 to defeat Lapel (185) and Yorktown (206) Thursday.

All five Marauder golfers were in the 40s, led by Gigi Avers with a 42. Izzy VanHeel, Natalie Miner, and Aerin Hubbell all shot 43s and Kylie Hyde finished with a 46.

Mt. Vernon will compete Saturday at Albany Golf Club in the Hoosier Heritage Conference tournament.

Dragons defeat Bears

Playing with its junior varsity team Thursday at Blue Bear Golf Course in Shelbyville, New Palestine defeated Shelbyville’s varsity team 195-215.

New Palestine freshman Tessa Mohr was medalist with a round of 44. She was followed by Janie Hamilton 48, Matti Tiede-White 49 and Alyssa Beller 54.

The Dragons girls golf team will compete Saturday at Albany Golf Club in the Hoosier Heritage Conference tournament.

Volleyball

Marauders lose at Yorktown

In a battle of two unbeaten Hoosier Heritage Conference volleyball teams, Mt. Vernon was defeated by host Yorktown Thursday, 3-0.

The Marauders dropped to 2-1 in HHC play. Yorktown is 4-0.

Mt. Vernon lost by set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-14.

Alivia Morgan had a Marauder-best five kills and three blocks. Sophia Damer had two service aces. Ainsley Baer had 11 digs.

The Marauders are 8-6 overall. The Tigers are 11-3.

Mt. Vernon competes in the Zionsville Round Robin Saturday.

Boys soccer

Dragons improve to 4-0 in HHC

The New Palestine boys soccer team scored four goals in each half and defeated visiting Shelbyville in a Hoosier Heritage Conference match 8-1 Thursday.

The Dragons are 4-0 in the HHC and 5-4 in all matches. Shelbyville is 2-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Cohen Wintin, Cole Christopher and Andon Colclazier had two goals each. Elliott Canova and Paxton Holmes added goals.

Canova had two assists, Colclazier, Wintin, Holmes, Mark Everett and Drew Potter each had one.

The Dragons host Lawrence North Saturday, beginning with a JV match at 10 a.m.

Boys tennis

Dragons win two in a row

The New Palestine boys tennis team picked up victories Wednesday and Thursday.

On Thursday, the Dragons improved to 3-1 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 4-1 victory over visiting Yorktown.

Moses Haynes, Arjomand Khokhar and Brady Torzewski each won singles matches by scores of 6-2, 6-0. On Wednesday, all three won 6-1, 6-0 in a 5-0 triumph at Lawrence Central.

Against the Tigers on Thursday, New Palestine added a win at No. 2 doubles from Eli Sloan and Tyler Wilson, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (6). The No. 1 group of Max Havel and Joey McPike lost 2-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Along with the three singles wins Wednesday, Havel/McPike won 6-1, 6-2 and Sloan/Wilson won 6-2, 6-1.

The Dragons are 5-4 overall and will host the Hancock County Tournament Saturday.

Marauders win HHC match

Mt. Vernon’s boys tennis team earned a 5-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference win over visiting Shelbyville Thursday.

All five matches were straight set wins. Adam Koon won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0. Manny Downs was the victor at No. 2, 6-0, 6-1. Tate Cougill picked up the victory at No. 3, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles action, at No. 1, Robbie Moore and Matthew Jones won 7-6, 6-3. Bryndan Wylie and Max Orelup won 6-0, 6-2.

The Cougars play in the Hancock County tourney Saturday at New Palestine High School.

Cougars postponed

Greenfield-Central’s boys tennis match at Knightstown was postponed. A makeup date has not been scheduled.

The Cougars are back in action Saturday in New Palestine at the Hancock County tourney.
