NEW PALESTINE – The Southern Hancock community celebrated two groups of people at its school board meeting earlier this month.

“Accentuate the Positive” is a spot in the beginning of the meeting in which good news is honored.

The board recognized 12 high school students that received AP Scholar with Distinction honors from the Advanced Placement Program. In order to receive this distinction, students were identified as scholars that received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. This is the highest distinction granted by the Advanced Placement Program.

The board then presented Accentuate the Positive recognitions to the SH transportation department. Earlier in the year the department received recognition from the Indiana State Police by getting a 100% pass rate on their annual bus inspections. In order to receive this distinction, they must prepare each of the buses for annual inspection and show that they are each ready to keep students safe on the road. While all school and multiple-function school activity buses require regular maintenance, Indiana law requires the State Police Department to perform an annual inspection on all buses and a semi-annual inspection on buses at least 12 years old to ensure safe operation.
