HANCOCK COUNTY — Early season high school media and coaches polls have representations from local programs in football, girls soccer, boys cross country and boys tennis.
The initial Associated Press Indiana High School Football Poll was released Tuesday. Both New Palestine, at No. 6, and Greenfield-Central, at No. 10, were represented in Class 4A.
New Palestine lost its season opener last Friday to Class 6A No. 6 Westfield, 34-14. Greenfield-Central defeated Class 3A Madison, at home, 49-0.
Both the Dragons and Cougars are also ranked in the Class 4A Indiana Football Coaches Association Poll. New Palestine was No. 2 in the coaches preseason poll, but dropped to No. 5 after last week’s loss to the Shamrocks. Greenfield-Central is No. 1o in the latest IFCA rankings.
New Palestine travels to Class 5A AP No. 8 Decatur Central Friday. G-C is on the road against 3A Greensburg, coached by former New Palestine assistant coach Wes Anderson.
Mt. Vernon’s girls soccer team is new to the Class 3A Indiana Soccer Coaches Association (ISCA) poll.
The Marauders are 3-1 on the season and came into this week’s poll ranked No. 20. Their lone loss is to Class 2A No. 3 Chatard. They have a win over Class 1A No. 14 Tipton. They are scheduled to play at Class 3A No. 7 Homestead Saturday.
Mt. Vernon’s boys cross country team is No. 20 in the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches poll (IATCCC).
The Marauders are coming off a victory Saturday at the Plainfield Invitational. They were eighth out of 39 teams in the Valley Kick-Off in Terre Haute, a meet that featured a number of top teams in Indiana and other states, on Aug. 12.
The Mt. Vernon Invitational, which doubles as the Hancock County Meet, is Saturday at Mt. Vernon High School.
In tennis, Mt. Vernon and Greenfield-Central are outside of the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association (IHSTECA) Top 30 poll, but are No. 1 and No. 2 in the District 4 poll.
The tennis coaches, along with their state poll, rank teams by the eight districts.
The Marauders are 3-2 on the season, but the losses have come to No. 7 Floyd Central and No. 12 Center Grove. Greenfield-Central is 6-0 on the season.
Not in the poll currently, but New Palestine’s girls golf team was honorable mention in the preseason Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association (IHSGCA) poll. The Dragons are 6-0 in dual meets this season.
New Palestine is scheduled to compete against Fishers Thursday.
