Mattress fundraiser coming up at GCHS
GREENFIELD – Greenfield-Central High School’s band and guard program will host its eighth annual mattress fundraiser Aug. 27.
The event, through Custom Fundraising Solutions, will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the school’s band room. There will be 30 mattress styles on display; name-brand mattresses are available for up to 50% retail value with proceeds benefiting the music program. Mattresses are available two to three weeks after the fundraiser and delivery is available.
CFS first introduced mattress fundraising in Ohio in 2005. The company now has nearly 100 locations and works with 3,000 schools nationwide. To date, the company has given back over $50 million to school programs, according to a press release. For more information, visit bit.ly/beds4greenfield23.
Online tool from library tutors students
GREENFIELD – Hancock County Public Library offers patrons an extensive suite of study tools and access to live tutors through BrainFuse HelpNow services. BrainFuse allows students of all ages and ability levels to get the most from their education with on-demand tutors for homework help, test prep, and skill building, according to a press release from the HCPL. Patrons can receive personalized help to meet their specific needs.
Connecting with tutors is free. All live sessions can be saved for later review. Users can create flash cards and other study materials to fit their preferred learning style. Users can also utilize the BrainFuse Writing Lab for help with writing assignments and reviews from tutors. Students can also collaborate using the “MEET” feature to form online study groups with other users.
The Adult Learning center is geared toward adults looking to continue their education and gain knowledge for marketable job skills. Users can also find exam preparation for high school equivalency and US citizenship tests, as well as help with resume writing and other career resources.

Cottrell named to dean’s list
GREENFIELD – Greenfield resident Brandon Cottrell was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at University of Maryland Global Campus.
To be eligible for the honor, a student must complete at least six credits during the term, earned a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the term, and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 at UMGC.
MV schools to host job fair
GREENFIELD – Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation will host open interviews from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 29 at the administration center, 1806 W. Ind. 234, Fortville.

Local students named to athletic list
HANCOCK COUNTY – Several student athletes from Trine University with Hancock County ties were named to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. To earn the honor, students must reach a 3.5 grade-point average for the academic year and earn a varsity letter in an MIAA-sponsored sport to be eligible.
The list included: Joel Walton, Fortville, a member of the baseball team majoring in sport management; Anthony Hentz, Greenfield, a member of the football team majoring in computer science and information technology; Tyler Murphy, Greenfield, a member of the men’s soccer team majoring in design engineering technology; Taylor Koch, Greenfield, a member of the softball team is majoring in sport management; Lucas Tutrow, Greenfield, a member of the men’s track and field team majoring in civil engineering; and Rachel Campbell, Greenfield, a member of the volleyball team majoring in exercise science pre-physical therapy.
Social skills program coming up
GREENFIELD – An after school social skills development program is available for Hancock County children in grades 3-8.
Building Our Social Skills, or BOSS, is a program taught by certified staff from local schools through Families United for Support and Encouragement. Children learn about communication, being part of a group, expressing feelings, caring about themselves and others, listening, problem solving and more.
