HANCOCK COUNTY – Marching band students across Hancock County have been practicing this summer, preparing to showcase their new shows to audiences and compete for awards.

Here’s a look at each high school’s new show, and how to see them:

Greenfield-Central High School: “Mysteries, Monsters and Myths” is G-C’s new spooky and fun show, with aliens, BigFoot and the Bermuda Triangle featured. There are 135 students on the field this year, under the direction of Chris Wing. Assistant band directors are Zach Crowder, Richard Tuomi and Sean Widmer. The first community show is at 7 p.m. Aug. 26; the free event is open to the public at the high school and will give the audience a sneak peek of what the competition season will look like. Drum majors this year are Lynsey Kojima, Avah Pollitt, Layla Gorden and Ava Powell; the first competition is Sept. 9.

New Palestine High School: “Fix You” is the theme of the Marching Dragons’ 2023 show, featuring 89 members under the directorship of Jon Carney. The first local performance is Sept. 1 at NPHS as a halftime show of the football game; the band’s first competition is Sept. 9.

Mt. Vernon High School: “mozARTrageous” is the name of Mt. Vernon’s show, as a fun twist of classical pop music from Mozzart, Lizzo and Falco. The band features 92 students under new director Dr. Kathryn Spangler. The first football game performance is Aug. 18 at Lucas Oil Stadium; the first competition is Sept. 9.

Eastern Hancock High School: Eastern Hancock competes on a different circuit than the other county high schools, so its season is almost done already. The 2023 production called “Reboot” is based on the overuse of technology. There are 40 students in the band, under the directorship of Adam Eaton with staff of Ashley Eaton, Zach Wright, Tori Angel and Alex Gerbic. The band competed at the Indiana State Fair Band Day Aug. 4; the final performance of the season will be Aug. 12 as part of the Indiana Band Showcase at Lucas Oil Stadium.
