Shirley FD to host benefit hog roast

SHIRLEY – The annual Shirley Fire Department Hog Roast is coming up at 3 p.m. this Saturday Aug. 5.

The event lasts until the food is gone. All proceeds will benefit the fire department’s new building fund, maintaining gear, equipment and trucks and help provide other community outreach services. The Glory Hog Meal – pulled pork and macaroni and cheese – is $10. A meal is $7; sandwich, $5; drinks, $1 and extra sides, $1. For updates, visit facebook.com/ShirleyVolunteerFireDepartment.

Cemetery educational program coming up

GREENFIELD – Learn about cemeteries, headstones and how they are designed to leave a lasting legacy in an event coming up at the Hancock County Public Library.

“A Walk in a Cemetery – Genealogy Interest Group” wil be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the main branch of the library, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield. Archaeologist Cathy Draeger-Williams will discuss what can be learned from the symbolism on headstones in cemeteries. Draeger-Williams is an archaeologist with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology. The Landing Place to host luau fundraiser

GREENFIELD – Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch will be the keynote speaker at an event this month benefiting The Landing Place.

The luau-themed event will be at Adaggios Banquet Hall, 5999 W. Memory Lane. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 10 with dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dinner tickets are $40 with additional sponsorship levels available. Registration is at thelandingplacehc.com.

The Landing Place, located in downtown Greenfield at 18 W. South St., is a faith-based non-profit organization that gives youth ages 13 to 19 real-life strategies and principles to break the cycles of dysfunction and destructive behavior, while also learning healthy patterns of living. Library starting new crafting club

GREENFIELD – A new crafting club for adults is launching this month.

Crafternoon Club is 1-3 p.m. Aug. 15 in the Grace Rea Study Room 3 of the Hancock County Public Library, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield.

Bring your own crafting project to work on and join for conversation and camaraderie. All skill levels are welcome. Adult coloring pages and colored pencils will also be available for those who don’t have a project to bring. Register at hcplibrary.org or call 317-462-5141.
