Carlie Everett Nyberg, 94, Greenfield, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at his residence, on his own terms doing what he enjoyed most, tending to yard work. Carlie was born into a home that did not have running water nor electricity on June 23, 1929, in Stonington, Michigan, the youngest of 10 children to Carl and Mae (Macabee) Nyberg. He served our country in the U.S. Army from 1953—1958.
Carlie married Mildred Lucille Pierce in January 1960. Carlie worked 31 years at Western Electric filling different capacities, retiring in 1984. He was a member of I.B.E.W. Local 1504 and a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America. Carlie lived in the Layne Crest subdivision, a Greenfield neighborhood dedicated to the many World War II and Korean War veterans. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping, traveling, photography, and tending to his yard. He supported the Indiana Sheriff’s Association with yearly pledges. He relished Lucille and his 1980 big trip to Hawaii after much planning. He attended Greenfield First Assembly of God church for many years. After Mildred’s passing in February 1994, he was later invited to church by the neighbor friend, Virginia Lucille Ogden, and their friendship blossomed over the next 20 years.
Carlie is survived by his loving, dedicated, life-long neighbor friend Tonya Kelley. Tonya lived across the street from Carlie and Lucille since the age of 2. Specifically, over the past 6 years, Tonya worked closely with Carlie taking him to doctor appointments, ordering groceries, ensuring he ate, kept up his strength, maneuvered through the pandemic, cooked, cleaned, and made sure he knew how to use his new phone. Communication was multiple times a day and thoroughly loved and enjoyed by both. She even moved in with him briefly. But whenever around Carlie, Tonya always felt at home. Tonya’s dog, Gracie, also brought much joy to Carlie and he claimed her as his own. The doctors and nurses were often taken aback by Tonya, a neighbor, stepping in and ensuring great care, physical health, and mental health for Carlie. Carlie often expressed his great love for Tonya and others who assisted in his care. Carlie’s daughter, Lynn “Susan” Rangel from Texas, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
Carlie lived a long and wonderful life lending him to out-live most he loved, including his beloved wife, Lucille; neighbor friend, Virginia; his children: Joseph Pierce, Rick Nyberg, Charles Pierce, Mary Lance, and Barbara Perry; and siblings: Elmer Nyberg, Herman Nyberg, Rudolph Nyberg, Lillian Birch, Bertha, Florence, Ann Ellis, and Esther Collish.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, with the service immediately following at 2:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Park Cemetery, with military funeral honors performed by the Army and Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard.
