GREENFIELD — After serving six years as principal at Greenfield Intermediate School, Devon Marine is leaving to take over as Elementary Curriculum Director for the Greenfield-Central schools.
Bronson Curtis, who served under Marine as assistant principal last year, is taking over as principal at the intermediate school.
Both men — each of whom is a dad of three school-age children — say they’re excited about the change.
“I enjoy this type of work, so I’m really excited,” said Marine, who will work directly with principals of the elementary and intermediate schools.
The 2023-24 school year will be his 24th year in education.
He joined the Greenfield-Central district in 2007 as assistant principal at Maxwell Intermediate School back when it was known as Maxwell Middle School.
Marine then helped usher in the new Greenfield-Central Junior High School as assistant principal in 2010, then became assistant principal at Maxwell Intermediate School in 2013.
A year later he was hired on as principal at Eden Elementary school, where he stayed until taking the helm at Greenfield Intermediate School in 2017.
“I have worked at every level in my education career, but elementary is definitely the area that I love the most,” said Marine.
“There’s a lot of good things going on at Greenfield-Central right now, so I’m just excited to continue that good work.”
He feels Curtis will do a great job in taking over the reins at Greenfield Intermediate School.
“I’m excited for him,” said Marine. “He’s only been here a year but he’s worked really hard to win over the staff, the students and the families, and he’s done a great job at getting acclimated to the community.”
Curtis said it only took him two weeks working at the junior high last fall before he and his wife made the decision to sell their house in Anderson and make the move to Greenfield.
“I love that the community is so supportive, and I love the school system. It’s a large school with lots of opportunities for kids,” said Curtis, who was impressed early on with how much of the community came out to support the students at the homecoming parade.
“I had walked in the parade with one of our after-school programs, and I was just blown away by the amount of people who came out to support all those children. It was amazing,” he said. “I told my wife we need to get down to Greenfield. It’s the best move that we’ve made as a family.”
Curtis started his education career in 2006 as a fifth-grade teacher in Fountain City then switched to the same role at an elementary school in South Carolina.
He then moved back to Indiana in 2019 to take over as dean of students at Anderson Community Schools, where he served more than three and a half years before taking the assistant principal position at Greenfield Intermediate School.
“I think the biggest thing we have going for us is our staff,” he said of the school for fourth through sixth graders.
“We have an amazing staff who collaborates well and really cares about the kids,” said Curtis. “We had a lot of new faces at the beginning of last school year, but we kind of hit our stride in the middle of last year. I’m very excited to see where we’re headed.”
Greenfield-Central’s superintendent, Harold Olin, is also excited to see the impact Curtis and Marine can make in their new roles.
“Mr. Marine brings a wealth of great experience to the curriculum role. He is highly respected by the G-C staff, so I am expecting him to have an immediate, positive impact,” said Olin.
“We considered more than 20 applicants for the GIS principalship. In the end, the interview team members all concluded that Mr. Curtis was our best fit.The current staff in the school was very excited to work with Bronson in the new role.”
Greenfield-Central kicks off the 2023-24 school year Aug. 2.
