Joseph S. Carroll, age 81, of New Palestine, IN. died June, 15, 2023.

Mr. Carroll was born January 26, 1942, in Richmond, IN., the son of Joseph E. and Margaret C. (Laughner) Carroll.

He grew up in Cambridge City, IN. and was a 1960 graduate of Lincoln High School where he was a member of the varsity baseball and basketball teams. He graduated from Indiana University in 1965 with a B.S. Degree in Business. Mr. Carroll was a decorated disabled veteran of the Vietnam War who served 4 years as a commissioned officer in the United States Army and was discharged with the rank of Captain.

Mr. Carroll was the retired supervisor of the Indianapolis National Service Office of the Disabled American Veterans. He also served as the State Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, Department of Indiana from 2002 to 2003. He was named a Distinguished Hoosier in 2002 and a Sagamore of the Wabash in 2003 by Governor Frank O’Bannon for his service to veterans. He was appointed to the State of Indiana’s Veterans Affairs Commission by Governor Mitch Daniels in 2008 and served in that capacity until 2013. Mr. Carroll also served as the Hancock County Veterans Service Officer from January 1, 2004, until his retirement on December 31, 2012. He was named the County Service Officer of the Year in 2008 for the State of Indiana.

Mr. Carroll was a life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 52 in Indianapolis, and a member of American Legion Post 119 in Greenfield. He was a lifelong sports fan who never gave up on his beloved Indiana Hoosiers. He was a friend to anyone who had worn the uniform and had served their country. His favorite past time was to drive his corvette.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katherine L. (Soult) Carroll, son Stephen M. Carroll, daughter – in- law Tracey L. (Walters) Carroll, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with the 6th great grandchild due in January of 2024.

Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara S. (Carroll) Williams.

Memorial Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Disabled American Veterans National Service Foundation.

Services will be held at the Flanner Buchanan Memorial Park Cemetery and Funeral Center, (9350 E. Washington St, Indianapolis, IN). Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 4pm to 8pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 12 noon with additional visitation from 11am to 12 noon. The burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.
