Eastern Hancock’s boys basketball team improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Mid-Eastern Conference with a 74-28 victory in the home opener against Wes-Del Saturday.

The Royals led 25-4 at the end of the first quarter and 48-9 at halftime.

Four Eastern Hancock players scored in double figures. Senior guard Jacob Spaulding led the way with 19 points, which included three 3-point field goals. Senior Silas Spaulding finished with 15 points. Grant Gray had 13 and Edric Miller scored 10.

Eastern Hancock is back in action Friday at Northeastern.

New Palestine improves to 3-0

On the road for the first time this season, New Palestine’s boys basketball team defeated Rushville 70-33 Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Dragons jumped out early, leading 22-6 after the first eight minutes.

Nine different players scored and four scored in double figures. Senior Blaine Nunnally led the way with 14 points. Sophomore Ben Slagley had 12. Seniors Bryant Nunnally and Ian Stephens each scored 10 points.

New Palestine returns to action Friday with its Hoosier Heritage Conference opener at Greenfield-Central.

G-C defeats Northeastern

Going 11 days between Game 1 and Game 2, Greenfield-Central’s boys basketball team showed little rust, jumping out to a 22-9 first-quarter lead on the way to a 61-47 victory over visiting Northeastern Saturday.

The Cougars shot 47 percent from 3-point range and were led by senior Dylan Moles with 24 points. He was 8 of 14 from the field and 3 of 6 on 3s.

Tyler Kerkhof added 15 points, hitting 4 of 7 3-pointers. Sophomore Braylon Mullins had 10 points, six rebounds and a number of defensive deflections. Off the bench, Braden Robertson had six points on 2 of 3 3s.

The Cougars play host to Decatur Central tonight.

Loss drops Mt. Vernon to .500

Against Fishers, ranked No. 10 in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll, Mt. Vernon lost 73-56, at home, Saturday.

Mt. Vernon was led in scoring by freshman Julien Smith with 13 points. Senior Eli Bridenthal scored 12. Frosh Luke Ertel and senior Adam Hackett each scored 10 points. Hackett had eight rebounds.

Fishers was led by sophomore Jalen Haralson with 31 points.

Mt. Vernon is 2-2 overall. The Marauders open Hoosier Heritage Conference play Friday, at home, against Pendleton Heights.

Girls basketball

Royals fall to former 3A champs

In a tight battle on the road, Eastern Hancock’s girls basketball team led much of the day but fell just short of a win, dropping a 47-46 decision to 2019 Class 3A state champion and 2020 state runner-up Northwestern Saturday.

The Royals are 9-2 and had their seven-game win streak snapped. They are ranked No. 9 in the Class 2A Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association poll. The Tigers are 7-2 and ranked No. 10 in Class 3A. It was their seventh straight victory.

Grace Stapleton hit 3 3-pointers and led the Royals in scoring with 15 points. Sammie Bolding had 12 points.

The Royals travel to North Decatur tonight.

Dragons improve to 2-0 in HHC

New Palestine won its fourth straight and improved to 2-0 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 75-41 victory at Delta Saturday.

Isabella Gizzi led the Dragons with 22 points. Allie Blum followed with a career-best 21. Blum scored 11 in the second quarter. Vivian Miller added 18 points.

The Dragons are 6-3 overall and travel to Shelbyville tonight for another HHC encounter.

The Golden Bears are 8-1 overall and 0-1 in the HHC, losing a two-point game to Pendleton Heights on Nov. 26.

Boys wrestling

Cougars third at Irish Super 6

Greenfield-Central’s boys wrestling team went 3-2 at the Cathedral Irish Super 6 Saturday.

The Cougars finished in third place and wrestled against three state-ranked teams. Greenfield-Central beat No. 14 Avon 42-31, lost 45-22 to No. 12 Warren Central and were defeated 46-12 by No. 5 Cathedral.

Additional wins came over Ryle (Ky.), 42-27 and Connersville, 65-9.

At 170, Clay Guenin went 5-0. Both Isaiah Holden (152) and Cohen Hager (145) went 4-1.

Four other wrestlers had winning records, 3-2, on the day. That group included Cade Zuber (126), Silas Frye (182), Tristen Lanum (195) and Brayden Flener (Heavyweight).

G-C is back in action Wednesday with a dual meet at New Palestine.

Dragons go 3-2 at Jeffersonville

At the Jeffersonville Invitational Saturday, New Palestine’s boys wrestling team went 3-2.

Gunner Butt (106), Cole Vandygriff (113), Bryce Doss (120) and Shaun Glass (195) all went 5-0.

The Dragons defeated Jeffersonville (49-30), Jennings County (52-24) and Evansville Memorial (49-24). They lost to Columbus East (40-24) and Tell City (39-38).

Brandon Brees (220) and Colin Whetsel (182) each went 4-1. Jack Rossell (132) went 3-1 and Elijah Alonso (138) had a 3-2 record.

New Palestine will host Greenfield-Central in a dual meet Wednesday.

Marauders place sixth at Shamrock Duals

Mt. Vernon went 3-2 and finished in sixth place at the Shamrock Duals, hosted by Westfield High School, Saturday.

Devin Kendrex (220/285), Conner Bayliss (106/113) and Elijah Broady (120) all went 5-0.

Ty Barnhart (106/113), Tristan Trevino (138) and Russell Weaver (195) each had 4-1 records. Aiden Kiner (145) and Elijah Kiner (152) went 3-2.

The Marauders defeated Norwell (36-27), Yorktown (43-33) and Fishers (42-30) and lost to Westfield (40-33) and Homestead (39-28).

Mt. Vernon is back in action Saturday at the Chris Traicoff Memorial Tournament in Calumet.

Cougars finish third

Greenfield-Central, with 404 points, finished third at the Hall of Fame Classic Saturday, hosted by Franklin Community High School.

Competing among the top teams in the state, the Cougars’ day was highlighted by a 1-2 finish from Norah Johnson and Alyssa Osborn, respectively, in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Cece Duffy-Johnson, Mary Ellen Stratman, Osborn and Johnson added a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

Duffy-Johnson was second in the 200 freestyle.

Rachel Stutz, Taylor Parsons, Reagan Crouch and Duffy-Johnson added a third in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Cougars return to action Thursday with a home meet against Pendleton Heights.

Marauders seventh at Pike

Mt. Vernon’s girls swimming and diving team placed seventh at the Pike Invitational Saturday.

The Marauders got top eight finishes from Emme Grubbs in the 100-yard butterfly and Calista Smith in the 100 breaststroke along with their 200 medley relay team of Catherine Hiner, Smith, Grubbs and Anna Hiner and the 400 freestyle relay group of Anna Hiner, Grubbs, Maddie Meyer and Smith.

Mt. Vernon is back in action today at New Palestine.

Boys swimming

Mt. Vernon places fifth at Pike

At the Pike Invitational Saturday, Mt. Vernon’s boys swimming and diving team finished in fifth place.

The Marauders had four event winners. Brady Gray took top honors in the 100-yard freestyle. Matthew Garey won the 100 breaststroke.

The 200 medley relay team of Garey, Camden Cave, Gray and Ethan Murphy won their race. The same quartet in different order (Gray, Murphy, Garey, and Cave) won the 400 freestyle relay.

Cougars finish seventh in Franklin

At the Hall of Fame Classic in Franklin, Greenfield-Central’s boys swimming and diving team finished in seventh place with 67 points.

The Cougars got a third-place finish in diving from Alex Jahrsdoerfer. They picked up fourth-place points in the mixed 250-yard freestyle relay, which included Colten Mayberry and Aiden Michael from the boys side along with Norah Johnson and Cece Duffy-Johnson from the girls team.

Gabe Hall was sixth in diving. Jaeden Peters was eighth in the 500 freestyle.

G-C is back in action Thursday with a home meet against Pendleton Heights.
