Maxen Hook, who helped lead New Palestine to back-to-back Class 5A state football championships, was named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week.
The University of Toledo
Former New Palestine standout Maxen Hook, a sophomore safety at the University of Toledo, was named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in Saturday’s 27-24 win at Eastern Michigan.
Hook tied a career-high with 13 tackles and nabbed the first interception of his career, a game-clincher late in the fourth quarter. It was Hook’s second straight game with at least 10 tackles and his third overall this season.
This marks the first MAC Player of the Week award for Hook.
The Rockets (6-3, 4-1 MAC) are off this weekend and then begin midweek MACtion on Tuesday, Nov. 8 vs. Ball State at the Glass Bowl. It will be a reuniting of two former New Palestine teammates. Kyle King is a defensive lineman for the Cardinals.
Roudebush helps lead Panthers
Eric Roudebush, a junior receiver at Hanover College, and a New Palestine High School grad, had a team-best five catches for 54 yards, including one touchdown in the Panthers 62-3 victory over Anderson University on Saturday.
Roudebush scored on a 15-yard pass play in the first quarter to give his team a 6-3 lead.
HC teammate Lance McKee, who played at Greenfield-Central, had two catches for 33 yards, including a 29-yard catch.
For AU, Caleb Byers, who also played for New Palestine, had two receptions for 14 yards.
Slunaker throws TD pass
Former Mt. Vernon standout Gehrig Slunaker, a freshman quarterback at Georgetown (Ky.) was 8 of 12 for 70 yards and one touchdown in a 65-13 win over Campbellsville Saturday.
Slunaker threw an 11-yard TD strike late in the first quarter to give his team a 14-10 lead.
Volleyball
Hornaday is Frosh of Week for fourth time
The Big South Conference, on Monday, selected Gardner-Webb’s Morgan Hornaday, a former standout at Greenfield-Central, as the Freshman of the Week, her fourth time winning the award this season.
Hornaday collected 73 assists (12.17 per set) and 16 digs (2.67 per set) between the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ pair of sweeps during the week. Thursday’s win at UNC Asheville saw her post the sixth double-double of the season with 10 digs and a new career-high in a three-set match for assists with 36. On Saturday she broke her new record in assists in a three-set match, finishing with 37 in the 3-0 win hosting USC Upstate.
This marked Hornaday’s fourth time being selected as the conference freshman of the week. Hornaday is the first player from Gardner-Webb to earn this honor at least four times in a season since Laura Wilcox in 2008.
Men’s cross country
Wilson earns HM All-HCAC honors
Samuel Wilson, a freshman runner at Franklin College from Mt. Vernon High School, earned honorable mention All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors with his performance at Saturday’s HCAC meet in Bluffton, Ohio.
Wilson finished 20th with a time of 26:55.5 for the 8K race.
Gage Guenin of Anderson University, and a graduate of Greenfield-Central, finished 32nd in 27:24.7.
Brayden Stamm, a Manchester sophomore who prepped at Mt. Vernon, was 53rd in 28:44.1.
