4 local football players named South All-Stars

Eastern Hancock’s Cooper Henderon (kicker), Mt. Vernon’s Lucas Rice (offensive line) and New Palestine’s Gabe Estes (linebacker) and Noah Grable (tight end) have been named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association South All-Star Team.

The South, which will be coached by New Palestine’s Kyle Ralph, will take on the North All-Stars on July 17 at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

Greenfield-Central hosting 2A regional

Greenfield-Central will host the boys basketball Class 2A basketball regional Saturday. Doors open at 9 a.m. The schedule:

10 a.m.: Park Tudor (22-2) vs. Northeastern (22-3)

Noon: Cloverdale (22-5) vs. Crispus Attucks (18-5)

8 p.m.: Championship game

All-Regional Tickets are on sale at participating schools and at the Greenfield-Central athletics office. Cost is $10. Individual tickets are $7 per session.

NASCAR Sprint Cup gears up in Arizona

Site: Avondale, Arizona

Schedule: Practice today (Fox Sports 1, 3 to 4:30 p.m.), qualifying (Fox Sports 2, 7:30 to 9 p.m.); Saturday, practice (Fox Sports 1, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.); race, 3:30 p.m. Sunday (Fox, 3 to 7 p.m.)

Track: Phoenix International Raceway (oval, 1 mile)

Race distance: 312 miles, 312 laps

Last year: Kevin Harvick raced to the first of his five 2014 victories en route to the season title. He also won in November for his third straight Phoenix victory, fourth in the past five races and record sixth overall at track.

Last week: Harvick won at Las Vegas for his first victory of the year. He has three victories and three second-place finishes in his past six races.

Fast facts: The race is the fourth of the year. Joey Logano won the season-opening Daytona 500, and Jimmie Johnson won at Atlanta. … Kurt Busch was cleared Wednesday to return to racing. He missed the first three races after NASCAR suspended him for allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend. … David Ragan is making his third straight start in place of the Kyle Busch in Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 Toyota. Busch broke his right leg and left foot in a wreck in the Xfinity race at Daytona.

Mt. Comfort soccer sign-ups underway

Upward Soccer is accepting registrations for boys and girls in kindergarten to sixth grade.

The final sign-up day is Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church.

Greenfield-Central sets athletics dates

Greenfield-Central girls tennis tryouts begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday. Complete athletics physical packet must be on file with athletics office.

The Greenfield-Central High School baseball team will host a bowling fundraiser Saturday at Strike Force Lanes in Greenfield. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m., with the event from 6 to 10 p.m. Cost is $25 per person. Lane sponsorships are available for $50.

Greenfield-Central winter sports award programs will be conducted on the following dates: cheerleading, 6:30 p.m. Monday, Cougar Meeting Room; girls basketball, 6 p.m. Wednesday, cafeteria; swimming and diving, 6 p.m. Thursday, cafeteria.
