GREENFIELD — Volunteers are needed in local elementary schools to help students boost their reading skills.

Southern Hancock and Greenfield-Central elementary schools are all accepting volunteers for programs that promote one-on-one tutoring to make a big impact on student success.

ReadUP, a program through the United Way of Central Indiana, is held in Greenfield’s Weston, J.B Stephens and Harris elementary schools. Tutors work with two third-grade students for a total of 60 minutes, one day a week. Tutors can select which day they want to tutor (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and tutor between the hours of 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. All supplies are provided; a brief training is also provided for new tutors. Tutors have the option of coming in every week, trading off with a partner or even serving as a substitute when regular tutors have conflicts.

This year due to COVID-19, there are only three to four tutors per session at each school (normally there are eight tutors per session). Social distancing included in the program.

ReadUp starts Sept. 7 and runs through April, with school breaks. To learn more or sign up, visit www.volunteercentralindiana.org/readup.

At Southern Hancock, Helping One Student to Succeed is seeking tutors. H.O.S.T.S. meet Monday through Thursday at Brandywine, New Palestine and Sugar Creek elementary schools.

Mentors work on reading skills with one second-grade student and one third-grade student for 30 minutes each. All materials are provided.

Similar to the ReadUp program, mentors can also choose to be a substitute only.

The program is run through the school corporation, which states that in recent years every third-grade child enrolled in the H.O.S.T.S program passed the IREAD-3 reading assessment test.
