Class 2A standouts net IBCA weekly honors

This past weekend, each of the regional sites around the state crowned winners, slimming the overall field from 64 boys basketball teams down to 16.

While there were several individual standout performances on Saturday, the Week 19 IBCA Players of the Week were, ironically, all seniors hailing from Class 2A.

Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian senior Caleb Furst, Blackford senior Luke Brown and Southridge senior Colson Montgomery are the honorees for Mar. 8-13 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Furst is the recipient in District-1. Brown wins for a third time this season in District-2. Montgomery takes home honors in District-3.

Local athletes named academic all-state

On Wednesday, seventy-two Indiana high school seniors (37 boys and 35 girls) were chosen as first-team academic all-state for 2021 by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

In addition, 263 more boys and 267 more girls were recognized as honorable mention academic all-state for 2021. Overall, 602 players received recognition on this year’s IBCA Academic All-State program.

The IBCA Academic All-State program is one where academic prowess and athletic prowess both are considered in the selections. Items such as grade-point average and academic class rank are considered along with athletic performance in areas such as points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game.

Greenfield-Central’s Addison Hill earned IBCA first-team girls academic all-state honors this year.

In addition, Mt. Vernon was represented by senior Chris Hays, who was named honorable mention IBCA boys academic all-state.

Mt. Vernon’s Riley Hasseld, Olivia Yeley and Lexi Shelton also earned IBCA girls academic all-state honorable mentions.

New Palestine’s Addi Jones was named IBCA girls academic all-state honorable mention.
