GREENFIELD — A barn on Franklin Street near the Copeland Farms subdivision was broken into in late November, and some $20,000 in tools and other family items was stolen.

The owner of the barn, which is in the 1400 block of North Franklin Street, said the break-in apparently occurred on Nov. 19 and that another attempted break-in took place on Thanksgiving Day. That burglary attempt was stymied because the owner had reinforced the barn and added security cameras.

The victim told the Daily Reporter many contractor and farming tools were taken, including older family possessions that had a lot of sentimental value, along with a musical instrument belonging to a family member.

The Greenfield Police Department is asking anyone living in the area who saw or heard anything near the barn on Nov. 19, 20, 24 and 25 to contact Detective Ross Yoder at 317-325-1287. Also, any homeowners in the area who might have security cameras that may have recorded a suspicious vehicle or person in the area is asked to contact Yoder.

Officials from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department noted Fralich’s Landscape, 959 W. County Road 100N, also had a large theft of landscaping equipment in September. That’s less than a mile away.

Capt. Robert Harris, public information officer for the sheriff’s department, said detectives are investigating multiple thefts throughout the county and are working with GPD.

Officials remind residents to make sure their properties — including vehicles left outside — are locked and secure. Security cameras, they point out, have become valuable assets in helping solve such crimes.
