GREENFIELD — The Greenfield-Central wrestling team lost its first dual of the season on Wednesday night, narrowly falling to visiting Franklin Central 42-36.

The Cougars ran out to a 4-0 record on the season after winning the South Dearborn Invitational on Nov. 21 and a dual against Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Pendleton Heights last week Wednesday.

Against Franklin Central, Greenfield-Central claimed seven matches with five by fall and two by decision.

Dakota Herald won his match at 113 pounds 7-5 in overtime, while Scott Stanley won by decision 5-4 at 195.

The Cougars’ (4-1) pins came from Clay Guenin (152 pounds), Chase Gardner (160), Brady Durnell (182), Jacob Blevens (220) and Cohen Hager (120).

Franklin Central was able to slip past Greenfield-Central behind seven pins.

The Cougars travel to the Avon Duals on Saturday.

Western narrowly escapes Mt. Vernon

The Mt. Vernon wrestling team won seven matches on Wednesday night, but visiting Western was able to slip past the Marauders 42-40.

The Marauders (2-1) opened the season with a pair of dual wins over Lawrence Central and Lawrence North last month.

They nearly added a third straight behind five pins, a forfeit win and a major decision against Western.

Zach Haughton (126 pounds), Carson Johnson (132), Parker Smitley (220), Russell Weaver (195) and Ben Presslor (182) each won by fall. Haiden Rose received a forfeit victory at 170. Joel Ratliff won by major decision at 160.

The Marauders travel to the Westfield Shamrock Duals on Saturday.

Girls Basketball

Cougars lose to Trojans

The Greenfield-Central girls basketball team dropped its fifth straight game Tuesday night, losing 56-39 at Bishop Chatard.

The Cougars (1-5) returned to the court Thursday night at home against Lapel.

On Tuesday, Addie Hill led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers, three assists and three rebounds.

Brooke Herrell had six rebounds. Caroline Gibson had a team-high seven rebounds. Herrell finished with eight points. Gibson added five points. Aryana Hibbard chipped in six points. Zoe Solis provided three points.

Swimming & Diving

Marauders split with Warriors

The Mt. Vernon boys and girls swimming and diving teams scored a win and a loss at home against visiting Warren Central on Tuesday.

The Marauders boys won 123-55. The girls team lost 104-70.

The Mt. Vernon girls won the 200-yard freestyle relay with the quartet of Maddie Moore, Fiona Wray, Abby Crouch and Annelise Hiner. The Marauders had two other event winners.

On the boys side, Mt. Vernon won individual events behind Aiden Tierney, Matthew Garey, Brady Gray, Braden Thomas, Aiden Murphy, Ethan Murphy and Logan Schomaker.

The 200 medley relay team of Schomaker, Tierney, Gray and Aiden Murphy were victorious. Schomaker, James Demircioglu, Aiden Murphy and Tierney won the 200 free relay.

Schomaker, Tierney, Demircioglu and Gray won the 400 free relay.

Both teams returned to the pool Thursday at Delta High School.
