HANCOCK COUNTY — Several schools in the county reported new COVID-19 cases Monday.

The latest figures are as of Friday, Oct. 23. The Indiana State Department of Health updates its online schools COVID-19 dashboard every Monday with figures as of the previous Friday. The dashboard does not list the number of new cases or case totals if they are fewer than five.

Mt. Vernon High School reported six new student cases, raising its total to 10. Maria Bond, director of community relations for the school corporation, said for the most part, parents of the students who have recently tested positive have kept those students home due to having symptoms of the virus, resulting in minimal contact tracing.

"Since the students who tested positive were primarily kept out of school during the contagion period prior to their positive test, we have not needed to close any school," Bond told the Daily Reporter in an email.

The school is also on a hybrid schedule, through which half of the students attend in person while the other half learns from home on alternating days. One of the reasons the school went hybrid was that less contact tracing would be required when new cases come up.

New Palestine High School is now reporting a total of 14 student cases, up from the 11 it reported last week. Before Monday, however, no Southern Hancock students had physically been in class for about two weeks due to fall break followed by a week of virtual learning to quell concerns over potential community spread.

Greenfield-Central High School reported fewer than five new student cases, raising its total to six.

Weston Elementary School in Greenfield has reported its first student case(s), resulting in a total of fewer than five.

Maxwell Intermediate School has reported its first staff case(s), resulting in a total of fewer than five. The dashboard defines staff "as anyone who works for the school not classified as a teacher."

The latest update reported no new teacher cases at Hancock County schools.

Greenfield Central Junior High School, Mt. Vernon Middle School and Eastern Hancock High School all respectively reported fewer than five new student cases, keeping their totals at fewer than five.
