HANCOCK COUNTY— Grace Silcox and Kristen Day, both of Hancock County, recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a girl can earn in Girl Scouting.

Silcox’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, Calculators 4 Kids, addressed the lack of high-end calculators available at Greenfield Central High School for students in the pre-calculus and calculus classes. Through fundraisers and donations, Silcox was able to raise enough money to buy 20 of the $120 calculators to put into the school library system so students could check out the calculators as if they were books. This allowed students to be able to access the calculators outside of the classroom as well as for important tests like the SAT and ACT. This fall, Silcox will be attending University of Indianapolis to study elementary education. She has been a Girl Scout for 11 years.

Kristen Day’s Girl Scout Gold Award project, Fountain Fix Up, focused on helping to revitalize an outside area of the Clearvista Lake senior living facility in Indianapolis. Through donations and money raised from the Girl Scout Cookie Program, Day was able to buy a new fountain, benches and plants to revamp the area and help make it more inviting for residents. Day graduated from Cathedral High School. She has been a Girl Scout for 11 years.
