Cosmic Kids’ yoga instructor Jaime becomes a block character during a yoga session in the world of Minecraft. submitted

As Indiana continues to move through the stages of opening up, more and more venues have opened their doors and are ready for business, but given the fact many summer programs and events were canceled early on, I’ll continue to bring you ideas for low-risk outdoor activities and things that you can safely do at home. This week, we have an opportunity for Lunchtime Laughs with ComedySportz — Indianapolis, a fascinating comic strip version to explain pandemic modeling, Minecraft yoga and Camp Invention’s home camping program.

ComedySportz offers noontime laughs

IN YOUR HOME — ComedySportz — Indianapolis offers family-safe fun with ComedySportz: Home Edition every Friday night from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. through July 24. The hilariously creative folks at ComedySportz will perform and interact via Zoom. Audience members can interact through the Chat feature of Zoom. As ComedySportz has been reduced to zero income due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ticket prices range from $10 to $50 in a pay-what-you-can format. Search ComedySportz: Home Edition on Facebook for more information and a ticket link.

IN YOUR HOME — If you’re looking for some real food for thought, 538, a politics, economics and sports blog offers up a comic strip explanation of pandemic modeling and what it’s so difficult. Although it’s in cartoon form, it does require some thought as it offers up a variety of prediction models and reasons why modeling the future of a pandemic is so challenging. You can find it at: fivethirtyeight.com/features/a-comic-strip-tour-of-the-wild-world-of-pandemic-modeling/ or just search ‘comic strip tour of pandemic modeling.’

Cosmic Kids offers Minecraft Yoga

IN YOUR HOME — Cosmic Kids, a website that teaches yoga and mindfulness to children (cosmickids.com), offers an energetic (and delightful) yoga session in the world of Minecraft. In case you’re not familiar with Minecraft, it is an incredibly creative video game that involves creating worlds, building structures and environments all out of blocks. Jaime, our yoga instructor, leads a 20-minute yoga session in a Minecraft background. While leading participants in a spinning exercise, she suddenly becomes a Minecraft figure and temporarily conducts the session as a block character. The weather in Minecraft world changes throughout, prompting Jaime to take on different poses. Minecraft yoga can be found at youtube.com/watch?v=02E1468SdHg.

Camp Invention offers at-home program

IN YOUR HOME — The popular Camp Invention program is now available as an at-home edition. The program, originally scheduled as an in-person program at J.B. Stephens Elementary, will run the week of July 13 through 17. The hybrid program features offline activities and optional online sessions that enable hands-on exploration through home-delivered activity kits that bring imagination, creative problem solving and fun to children’s living rooms. Modules include Camp Invention Flight Lab, Design Thinking Project, Rescue Squad and Camp Invention Champions. Campers will receive real-time coaching and collaboration with certified educators. The camp is open to kids in the kindergarten through sixth grade. For more information, visit invent.org/camp.
