HANCOCK COUNTY — A fire tore through a garage in a neighborhood just north of Greenfield Friday evening but firefighters prevented it from spreading to the house.
Firefighters responded to the blaze in the 3600 block of Lakewood Drive at about 6:13 p.m.
Tamera Petty, the homeowner and resident, said she was sitting on her back porch when she smelled something burning. When she made her way over to the front of her property, she saw the garage was on fire, she said.
Joe Douglas, who lives across the street from Petty, said he was driving home when he saw flames on the west side of the garage. He said he saw Petty distraught in her side yard and her dog tied to a leash near the garage. He got the dog and went over to Petty, who handed him her phone so he could talk to the emergency dispatcher.
Jimmy Roberts, chief of the Greenfield Fire Territory, said there was heavy fire in the garage upon firefighters’ arrival, with flames rising above the roof line out of the garage door.
Roberts said the garage is a total loss but the house it’s attached to only has smoke damage.
“The first crew got here, hit it hard and did a very good job keeping it from the house,” Roberts said.
Corey Breese, public information officer for the Greenfield Fire Territory, agreed.
“We were able to get a pretty quick stop, then after that it was just making sure it didn’t go anywhere else,” Breese said.
Roberts and Breese said the cause has yet to be determined. Breese said multiple investigators are investigating the fire.
Breese said two motorcycles in the garage were destroyed in the blaze.
Fire departments in Sugar Creek, Buck Creek, Green Township, McCordsville and Pendleton also responded.
