Mt. Vernon boys basketball coach Travis Daugherty announced in a statement Tuesday evening that he is stepping down as coach of the Marauders after five season.

“I’m stepping away from coaching so I can give my very best to my own kids in the coming years,” Daugherty’s statement said. “This was a tough decision, but not a difficult one (if you know what I mean).”

Daugherty leaves the Marauders after a 15-10 season and a loss in the regional semifinals. He had a 68-47 record as coach at Mt. Vernon and a sectional title last year.

“Travis is a great coach and a man of high moral character and we will miss having him on the sidelines,” Mt. Vernon athletics director Brandon Ecker said. “Bigger than his drive to win, which was always prominent, was his desire to have a positive impact on the basketball players and student athletes at Mt. Vernon High School. It was a tough day for Mt. Vernon, but we are happy for the Daugherty family and excited to continue working with Coach Daugherty as an educator and a leader within our school and athletic programs.

“Travis has been a big part of what we do here at Mt. Vernon and leaves some big shoes to fill.”
