Hope for Living: Where will you build?

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

— Matthew 7:24-27

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ comes with many decisions, one might think: Every day to decide what to wear, what to eat, what things do I say, what things should I not say.

A disciple of Christ could spend the entire day just making the next decision. That is what life is after all, isn’t it? A series of choices we make in hopes of achieving peace and happiness. What true disciple of Christ would say they have no desire of these things, or to have wisdom in the choices they make?

In 1 Corinthians 3 we are encouraged to really take notice of where and how we build our lives. If you’re a true disciple of Christ, then you know the foundation is none other than Christ, the Chief Cornerstone. The Rock! (Sorry, Mr. Johnson.) The passage to the Corinthian church goes on to say we have choices to make concerning our building materials … more Choices?!

Allow me to give you a theory I have. Let’s just make this simple! There is really just one choice, one decision that will make all the other diverse decisions just kind of take care of themselves. Choose Jesus!

I know what you’re thinking right now: “Well, big fat ‘duh,’ Larry,” but give me a moment more. The first and greatest commandment is that we love the Lord with ALL we are, right? Well, if I love Him, I choose Him.

If I love Him, I will allow Him to build my life where and how He wants. If I love Him, my life will be built on The Rock, Jesus Christ. If I love Him, my motives will be for Him, so all my building materials will be for Him.

I’m not sure if you know this or not, but if you’re a true disciple of Jesus Christ, then your life is to be all about Him. So, instead of answering the question that requires a decision — “Where will you build?” — with “Well, I could build here, or I could build there… ,” just answer it with “I don’t know; let me ask Jesus!”
