As it did in the regular season, Mt. Vernon was able to take the opening set off No. 2 Yorktown, but the Tigers won the next three to eliminate the Marauders 3-1 in the semifinal round of the Pendleton Heights Volleyball Sectional Saturday.

Mt. Vernon (21-10) lost by set scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-12.

Yorktown (30-2) went on to win its fifth straight sectional title by defeating Greenfield-Central 3-0 in the championship match.

The Tigers have won 19 straight matches and have lost just five sets during their run of regular-season victories. Two of the five sets were won by Mt. Vernon.

In the regular season, Mt. Vernon lost to Yorktown — the Tigers’ first win in their 19-match run — 22-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17.

On Saturday, for the Marauders, middle hitter Alivia Morgan led the attack with 14 kills. Jaycee Jones had 10 kills.

Middle hitter Olivia Johnson was part of four blocks, including one solo.

Avery Delello led the Marauders in digs with 18 and service aces with two. Sierra Holverson added 15 digs and Aubry Dowling recorded 10 digs.

Setter Ava Whitmore had 36 assists.

Royals eliminated by Heritage Christian

Eastern Hancock’s volleyball season came to an end Saturday in the semifinal round of the Scecina Memorial Sectional.

The Royals (23-7) lost 3-1 to Heritage Christian (12-15) by set scores of 27-29, 25-18, 25-13, 25-18.

It was the second time Eastern had played Heritage Christian.

In a regular-season match during the Eastern Hancock Invitational, the Royals beat the Eagles 2-1 by set scores of 25-22, 34-36, 15-13.

On Saturday, Kaitlyn Lowes had 15 kills and 10 digs. Ellie Meyer tallied 10 kills, 25 assists and nine digs.

Alana Eastridge had 13 digs. Briar Vancamp had 11 assists.

Both Cami Knight and Lowes had two blocks, including one solo each.

The Royals had five service aces.

Heritage Christian lost to Scecina (26-7) in the sectional championship match Saturday evening 3-2 by set scores of 26-24, 21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-7.

Roberts falls in regional final

Greenfield-Central’s Nathan Roberts was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Scecina’s Matthew Guarnieri in the Boys Tennis Individual Singles Tournament regional final at Fishers High School Saturday.

Roberts reached the final with a victory Saturday morning over Roncalli’s Christopher Stanley 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.

He finished the season 21-2, setting a school record for individual victories.
