Three arrested in drug bust

A man is dead following an accident between a vehicle and motorized wheelchair in Fortville.

GREENFIELD — Officials from the Greenfield Police Department (GPD) say a traffic stop on Monday has resulted in the arrest of three men from Indianapolis who are now facing serious felony drug charges.

Police say in a release a narcotics detective observed a vehicle speeding on West U.S. 40 and called for a patrol unit to initiate a traffic stop of the vehicle. Officers requested the assistance of a narcotics detection dog and an official from the Fortville Police Department, Sergeant Derek Archer and his dog Ozkar arrived and helped.

Ozkar, officials said they were alerted to the presence of a narcotic odor in the vehicle which developed a probable cause to conduct a search of the vehicle and that’s narcotics were found.

Officials say officers located illegal drugs inside of the vehicle and all four occupants were arrested. Officers later located more illegal drugs on two of the men at the Hancock County Jail.

Joseph Douglas, 43, Indianapolis, now faces charges of dealing cocaine, a Level 2 felony; dealing a narcotic drug, a Level 2 felony; resisting law enforcement, Class A misdemeanor; Marcus Maxie, 54, Indianapolis, faces charges of dealing cocaine, a Level 2 felony and Jalen C. Campbell, 18, Indianapolis now faces a charge of possession of a narcotic drug, which is a Level 6 felony.

Douglas and Maxie’s cases were opened in Hancock County Superior Court 1 Friday while Campbell’s case was opened in Hancock County Superior Court 2 Friday.

Officials note the other occupant of the vehicle was not charged with a crime and was later released by police. In total, officers located more than 16 grams of suspected fentanyl and more than 42 grams of suspected cocaine, along with U.S. currency.

Officials with the GPD thanked the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department and the Fortville Police Department for their assistance with the investigation.
