Letter to the Editor: Letter for my grandfather

To the Editor:

My grandfather was an exceptional man. He was a lifelong farmer, a Korean War veteran and a hilarious rascal. And unlike many Hoosiers his age, he voted Democratic in most elections I recall.

He passed away earlier this year. So, I’m writing on his behalf. Hopefully he’d be proud.

I won’t try to predict his vote on the national level. I probably could, but I care more about Indiana politics than national party drama.

Unfortunately, I can’t confidently say the same about Ethan Lawson.

Lawson’s website lists his priorities, and many are national party buzzwords: “Biden-Harris Inflation,” “China’s Fentanyl,” “Fighting Washington Dysfunction.” I can understand those being priorities for a presidential candidate. But for Indiana State Representative? Those are comfortable coattails to ride.

Not to mention most of those “priorities” come with a paltry sentence of explanation.

Lawson’s opponent, Nate Anderson, also has a priorities webpage. There, you’ll find paragraphs of specific plans for “Public School Funding,” “Mental Health and Addiction Services,” “Working Class Advocacy”…

And, to bring this back to my favorite rascal: “Veteran Programs.” My grandfather required a great deal of care in his final years, and I appreciate Anderson’s focus on easing the lives of soldiers like him. Which, I might add, is a concern Lawson’s website does not even pay lip service.

Based on Nate Anderson’s priorities, he is an exceptional Hoosier-focused candidate. My grandfather would’ve been proud to vote for him. As am I.
