GCJH girls cross country team finishes fifth at state meet

Led by an all-state performance from Mia Brinkruff, the Greenfield-Central Junior High girls cross country team finished fifth in the state at the Indiana Middle School Cross Country Championships Oct. 5 at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

Brinkruff ran her 3K race in 11:08.54.

New Palestine Junior High placed 14th and had an all-state runner in Adi Smith. She placed 18th with a time of 11:32.60.

Maple Creek Middle School won the race with 37 points. Greenfield-Central scored 264 and New Palestine totaled 370.

There were 31 teams and 292 runners in the Big Schools Varsity Division race.

In the boys 3K, Greenfield-Central Junior High finished 20th. Brownsburg East Middle School won the title in the race that included 41 teams and 372 runners.

Greenfield-Central Junior High’s Dominic Brown was 46th with a time of 10:45.51.

A week earlier at the Hoosier Heritage Conference meet at Henry County Memorial Park in New Castle, Greenfield-Central’s boys and New Palestine’s girls won HHC titles. It was Greenfield’s boys team’s first conference championship since 2018.

Brinkruff and Smith finished 1-2 in the girls race.

Teamwise, New Palestine’s girls won with 36 points. Greenfield-Central was second with 43. Greenfield-Central’s boys scored 56 and Mt. Vernon was second with 78.

At the county meet last month, Smith finished ahead of Brinkruff to take the individual title. Mt. Vernon’s Parker Quinn was the individual champion for the boys. New Pal’s girls and Greenfield’s boys won county team titles.
