Greenfield-Central sophomore No. 1 singles player Nathan Roberts advanced in the IHSAA Boys Tennis Individual Singles Tournament with a victory Saturday at Mt. Vernon High School to win his individual sectional tournament.

Roberts (20-1) won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, over New Castle’s Leo Underhill. It was Roberts second win of the season over Underhill and 20th of the season, setting a school record for individual wins in a season.

He will play Saturday at Fishers High School against Roncalli’s Christopher Stanley (9-6) at 10 a.m. If he wins the morning match he will play again at 2 p.m. against the winner of the 10 a.m. match between Jennings County’s Parker Bales (18-2) and Scecina’s Matthew Guarnieri (16-2).

Also at Mt. Vernon on Saturday, the New Palestine doubles team of seniors Moses Haynes and Max Havel were eliminated from the IHSAA Boys Tennis Individual Doubles Tournament.

Haynes and Havel lost 6-4, 7-5 to Hamilton Southeastern’s Tyler Rich and Landon Osswald. Haynes and Havel finished the season 18-3.

Boys cross country

Markley wins conference title

Eastern Hancock senior Preston Markley won the Mid-Eastern Conference boys cross country race Saturday, hosted by Blue River Valley High School.

Markley won the 5K race with a time of 16:19.47.

The Royals finished seventh as a team. Andrew Metz placed 24th in 19:21.65. Jud West (21:39.57) and Davis Decker (21:43.29) finished 52nd and 53rd, respectively. Caden Powers crossed the line 60th in 22:40.44.

Wapahani won the team title.

The Royals compete Saturday in the Mt. Vernon Sectional at 9:30 a.m.

Cooper, Dragons win invitational

Jake Cooper was the individual winner and the New Palestine boys cross country team won the team event at Saturday’s New Palestine Invitational.

Cooper was at the top of a New Palestine 1-2-3 finish. He won the 5K race with a time of 16:49.98. Teammates Mike Bauer and Gavin Smith placed second and third, respectively, with times of 17:57.04 and 17:57.62.

Carson Cooper placed sixth with a time of 18:31.34 and Gabe Silvey crossed the line in 18:58.83, finishing 13th.

Six teams competed in the event. New Palestine won with 25 points. Cascade was runner-up with 44.

The Dragons compete Saturday in the Mt. Vernon Sectional at 9:30 a.m.

Cougars 4th at Delta race

Greenfield-Central’s boys cross country team placed fourth in the 15-team Delta Eagle Cross Country Invitational at Taylor University.

Bryce Cotterman led G-C with an eighth-place finish and time of 16:50.8 on the 5K course. Henry Rahe was 12th in 17:08.6. John Wait crossed the line in 18th with a time of 17:18.6. Otto Sickels placed 52nd in 18:38.6 and Benjamin Flora finished in 73rd place with a time of 19:17.6.

Carmel won the race with 28 points. G-C had 143. Guerin Catholic’s Luke Moster won the race in 15:50.1.

The Cougars compete Saturday in the Mt. Vernon Sectional at 9:30 a.m.

Girls cross country

Kinnaman wins invitational title

Greenfield-Central sophomore Josie Kinnaman was the individual winner of the Delta Eagle Cross Country Invitational at Taylor University Saturday.

Kinnaman won the 5K race, that included 115 runners, with a time of 19:16.7, 25 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Taylor Tragesser of Guerin Catholic.

For the Cougars, Adalyn Cole placed 11th in 21:11.9. Kendall Barrett finished 16th in 21:29.9. Taylor Cooksey crossed the finish line in 27th with a time of 22:04.3 and Harper Rahe was 45th in 23:09.2.

Avon won the team title with 47 points. Greenfield-Central scored 93. There were 14 teams in the event.

The Cougars compete in Saturday’s Mt. Vernon Sectional at 9:30 a.m.

New Palestine earns first-place finish

New Palestine’s girls cross country team won the seven-team New Palestine Invitational Saturday.

The Dragons won with 34 points. Beech Grove was second with 60.

All five of New Palestine’s scoring runners placed in the top 10.

Abby Journay was third with a 5K time of 21:43.48. Taylor Burke was very close behind in fourth with a finishing time of 21:43.8.

Addison Uhl finished eighth in 22:56.4. McKenzie Hacker placed ninth in 22:57.41 and Heidi Bloomer was 10th in 23:08.55.

The Dragons compete Saturday in the Mt. Vernon Sectional at 9:30 a.m.

Johnson 7th at MEC

Eastern Hancock’s Sydney Johnson finished seventh at the Mid-Eastern Conference girls cross country race hosted by Blue River Valley High School Saturday.

Johnson ran her 5K in 21:01.68. Kaylee Swan was 13th in 22:57.57 and Riley Williams placed 46th in 35:15.65.

Monroe Central won the team championship. Wapahani’s AnnMarie Gibson was the individual winner in 19:14.67.

The Royals compete Saturday in the Mt. Vernon Sectional at 9:30 a.m.

Girls volleyball

Marauders go 1-3 at Carmel Invite

Mt. Vernon’s volleyball team went 1-3 in matches at Saturday’s Carmel Invitational.

The Marauders defeated host Carmel 2-1 and lost 2-1 to Class 3A No. 4 Northwood and Jennings County and 2-0 to Class 4A No. 5 Floyd Central.

Mt. Vernon (20-9) opened against NorthWood (24-6) and lost by set scores of 26-24, 20-25, 15-6.

Sierra Holverson had eight kills. Avery Delello and Holverson each had three service aces. Olivia Johnson had three blocks and Aubry Dowling had 11 digs.

The Marauders followed with a win over the Greyhounds (9-20) by scores of 25-23, 13-25, 15-13.

Jaycee Jones and Holverson each had eight kills. Delello had 10 digs and Ava Whitmore dished out 26 assists.

In a 2-0 loss to Floyd Central (26-5), Mt. Vernon lost by set scores of 25-19, 25-23.

Alivia Morgan led the attack with eight kills. Dowling had 11 digs and Whitmore recorded 22 assists.

Finishing the day with a 2-1 loss to Jennings County (23-8), the Marauders lost by set scores of 25-23, 10-25, 15-13.

Morgan and Holverson each had nine kills. Leah Kay totaled three blocks. Dowling led in digs with 17, Holverson had 11. Whitmore had 26 assists.

Mt. Vernon begins play in the Pendleton Heights Sectional Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Richmond (13-11).
