Local roundup: Former New Pal standout Nunnally commits to EIU

Former New Palestine multi-sport standout Blaine Nunnally announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he will continue his baseball and academic career at Division I Eastern Illinois University, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.

A 2023 New Pal grad, Nunnally is currently playing baseball at Southwest Tennessee Community College in Memphis.

A sophomore this season, Nunnally led the Saluqis in innings pitched as a freshman with 60.2 innings pitched. He was 5-6 with one complete game and a 6.08 earned run average.

He went eight innings and did not give up an earned run in a 4-2 victory over Chattanooga State on April 19. He gave up just four hits and struck out four.

Mt. Vernon’s girls volleyball team, in its final home match of the season, defeated Hoosier Heritage Conference rival New Palestine 3-1 Thursday.

The Marauders (19-6, 5-2) won by set scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-16.

Sierra Holverson had 11 kills and 17 digs. Jaycee Jones had a team-best 18 kills. Olivia Johnson had seven blocks, including three solos. Alivia Morgan recorded 11 kills and was part of five blocks.

Setter Ava Whitmore had 45 assists and 11 digs. Aubry Dowling had a team-best 18 digs and Avery Delello finished with 11 digs. Makenna Thompson served four aces.

For New Palestine (27-4, 4-3), Hayden Ramsey had 10 kills, two blocks and three service aces. Josie Corbett recorded seven kills, six digs and four aces. Natalie Sevier had six kills and 11 digs.

Caylee Brown finished with nine kills and Elena Cook had four kills.

Setter Samantha Gooding had 33 assists. Libero Azure Flagle led in digs with 17 and added three assists. Makaeli Johnson had eight digs.

Mt. Vernon will finish the regular season today at the Carmel Invitational with matches against NorthWood (20-6), Carmel (8-17) and Floyd Central (24-3). The invitational begins at 9 a.m.

Thursday’s match was New Palestine’s final regular season contest. The Dragons take on Greenwood (4-24) in the Roncalli Sectional at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Cougars win finale

Greenfield-Central’s volleyball team picked up its 20th win of the season on Senior Night Thursday.

Greenfield-Central defeated Triton Central (15-11) 3-0 by set scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-20.

The Cougars recognized their five seniors — Harper Holden, Lili Jeffries, Makenna Rankins, Rilee Roland and Madison Sonsini.

Greenfield-Central (20-9) plays Anderson (0-14) Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Pendleton Heights Sectional.
