People of Brown’s Chapel Wesleyan Church sit at decorated car trunks to greet those in costume passing by for treats at a past trunk or treat at the church. This year, the church’s Fall Fest is set for 5-7 p.m. Oct. 26.

Candy, costumes, pumpkins, s’mores … whatever your fall favorite, you can probably find it at one or more of the fall events taking place at area churches.

A number of churches will offer Trunk or Treats in their parking lots. Members decorate their vehicle trunks, stock them with candy and turn the parking lot into a one-stop-shop for trick-or-treating.

Other churches are contributing their fall fun to larger community events. Some have booths in the Greenfield Parks and Recreation’s community Trunk or Treat (6-8 p.m. Oct. 24 at Hancock County 4-H Fairgrounds, 620 Apple St., Greenfield). Or Outlook Christian Church offers its parking lot for the Town of McCordsville’s trunk or treat.

In downtown Fortville, area churches and nonprofits have booths at Treats on Main and FARM Community Fair, set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 26 along Main Street. They offer a game or candy to those who stop by, along with information for those who’d like to learn more about their work in the community.

“We want the kids to dress up,” said FARM (Fortville Area Resource Mission) board member Kelly Griffey. “There will be games and candy.”

Downtown businesses often offer specials during the event, and additional vendors will be set up south of the railroad tracks. Festivalgoers can snap photos in photo opp areas featuring straw, pumpkins and an old truck. They can also see a police car, fire truck and antique tractors.

This year, organizers encourage those who come to bring a non-perishable food item for the FARM pantry.

Those in costume can stop by the FARM tent across from Fortville Post Office from 10-11:30 a.m. Organizers will take instant photos of the costumes and collect them for judging at 11:30. Judges name winners and award prizes at noon (must be present to win). Categories are Best Family/Group, Cutest Baby (0-4 years), Scariest and Most Original.

Parking is available behind the post office and the Seals Funeral Home lot.

“It seems like the attendance has increased every year,” Griffey said. “The non-profits that I’ve talked to, they always enjoy that event and talking to people.”
