State Roundup: Butler crusies to fourth straight win

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Joey Suchy and Billy Dozier both ran for two touchdowns and Butler rolled to a 63-0 win over Division III Virginia-Lynchburg on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (4-0) had touchdowns on all nine of their possessions and piled up 463 yards, 349 on the ground. Griffin Caldwell, Nick Howard and Jerel Rhodes also had rushing touchdowns.

Howard also threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Trevon Brown. Howard completed 4 of 5 for 34 yards. Reagan Andrew completed 3 of 5 passes for 79 yards, including a 51-yard scoring connection with Ethan Loss.

The Dragons (0-5) were held to 77 yards passing as their running game finished with no yards due to four sacks and nine tackles for loss. They only had the ball for 19 minutes and picked up three first downs.

Lynchburg picked up 2 yards after halftime and Butler had just 159.

Valpo defeated at Morehead

MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) — Carter Cravens threw for two touchdowns and Morehead State beat Valparaiso 17-5 on Saturday in a Pioneer Football League opener for both teams.

Cravens threw a 44-yard touchdown to Bradley West on the game’s opening drive. Cravens completed the day’s scoring with a 25-yard score to Nate Garnett early in the fourth quarter.

Thomas Schwartz added a 35-yard field goal for the Eagles (3-2, 1-0), who are 25-5 all-time against the Beacons (2-3, 0-1).

Valparaiso’s points came on Ryan Hawk’s 46-yard field goal and a safety on a blocked punt.

Cravens was 5-of-16 passing for 132 yards. He wasn’t intercepted.

Two Beacons quarterbacks combined to go 12-of-24 passing for just 91 yards. Michael Appel Jr. threw two interceptions.

Branden Stearman and Matthew McClelland had the picks for Morehead State, which sacked the Beacons QBs nine times, including 3.5 by Noah Benza. Morehead State outgained Valparaiso 216-126.

Sycamores unable to rally from 17-point deficit, lose 27-24

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Eli Brickhandler threw for one touchdown and ran for a second and Dillon Fedor kicked a pair of field goals to carry Houston Christian to a 27-24 victory over Indiana State on Saturday.

The Huskies (2-3) jumped to a 17-0 lead after a quarter but the Sycamores (1-3) ran for a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to get within a field goal before Calvin Hill powered over from the 3 to cap a nine-play, 78-yard drive to make it 24-14. Houston Christian held a 24-17 advantage at halftime.

Fedor kicked a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter but Indiana State’s Elijah Owens scored from the 4 midway through the fourth to get the Sycamores within 3. Indiana State stopped Houston Christian on downs at the Sycamores 36-yard line with 2:44 left to play and drove 53 yards to set up a field goal that would tie the game and force overtime, but Jake Andjelic missed from 29 yards out in the final minute.

Brickhandler completed 12 of his 18 pass attempts for 101 yards and a 3-yard touchdown to Drake Martinez and carried 12 times for 70 yards and nosed in from the 1 for a score. Hill finished with 11 carries for 64 yards.

Owens was 22-of-30 passing for 131 yards and an interception and carried 13 times for 47 yards and a touchdown. Plez Lawrence carried 17 times for 160 yards and a touchdown and Shen Butler-Lawson added a dozen carries for 48 yards and a score.
