Baker’s Best contest Sept. 28

GREENFIELD — All Hancock County residents are welcome to join in the Baker’s Best contest. The program is sponsored by Tuttle Orchards and the Hancock County Extension Homemakers, and this year’s theme is “pumpkin.”

The contest will be 9-10 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Hancock County Extension office, 972 E. Park Ave., Greenfield. Judging will begin at 10:15 a.m.; winners will have their picture taken along with their baked product displayed at the Home Arts Show during the festival at the Hancock County Courthouse Annex.

The grand champion, in addition to receiving a $50 cash prize, will present their winning baked entry to the mayor at the Mayor’s Breakfast festival event Oct. 5. See the rileyfestival.com for rules.

Herbal teas, recipes to be featured at event

GREENFIELD – Herbal teas will be the program topic at the Hancock County Herb Society meeting in October.

Joyce Miler of Rushville’s Huckleberry Hutch will discuss how to gather and prepare ingredients for making herbal teas, then make and share some of her favorite recipes.

The program begins at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Lizabuth Ann’s Kitchen, located behind the James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum, 250 W. Main St., Greenfield.

Amateur radio club to learn about Antarctica

GREENFIELD — The Hancock County Amateur Radio Club is hosting a special speaker at a meeting this week.

The club meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25 with special speaker Dr. Gary Stouder. Stouder participated in an expedition to Peter 1 Island, Antarctica, where he set up and operated an amateur (ham) radio station. Stouder will have a multimedia presentation. The meeting will be at the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center, 640 S. Franklin St., Greenfield.

Clubs to promote membership at Riley Festival

GREENFIELD – The community is welcome to learn about masonic organizations at the upcoming Riley Festival.

Hancock Lodge 101, Greenfield York Rite, Golden Rulee and the Hancock County Shrine Club will host an informational booth Oct. 3-6 at the Riley Festival. Club members will be at Booth 515, just north of U.S. 40 and Ind. 9. Anyone interested in information are encouraged to stop by and talk with a member.

Birding group events wrap up for year

GREENFIELD – Greenfield Birders are hosting their final community bird watching events of the season.

The group is in collaboration with Greenfield Parks and Recreation and the National Audubon Society. The group will host events to gather and view birds at 9 a.m. Oct. 12 at Brandywine Park and 9 a.m. Oct. 26 at Beckenholdt Park. For updates, visit facebook.com/groups/GreenfieldBirders.

Quilt group meets monthly

GREENFIELD – The Night Owls Quilt Guild meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of every month at the Patricia Elmore Center in Greenfield.

Newcomers are welcome; bring any “show and tell” quilts and share quilting ideas.

Chamber to host meeting

GREENFIELD – The Hancock County Chamber of Commerce will host a meeting next week.

The event is at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 1 at NineStar Connect, 2243 E. Main St., Greenfield. Guest speaker is Jim Bishop of Conjunction Leadership. Cost is $15 and includes lunch; register by Sept. 27 at greenfieldcc.org.

The Greenfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Hancock Area Chamber of Commerce recently merged to form a united Hancock County Chamber of Commerce to combine resources, networks and services.
