Prep roundup: Dragons win 19th straight, go for No. 20 tonight

Libero Azure Flagle surpassed 1,000 digs for her career and the New Palestine Dragons volleyball team improved to 19-0 with a 3-1 victory at Perry Meridian Wednesday.

The Dragons won by set scores of 27-29, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.

Flagle had 29 digs on the night.

Natalie Sevier led the attack with 19 kills and added 21 digs. Josie Corbett recorded 16 kills and Caylee Brown added 13.

Setter Sam Gooding contributed 48 assists.

Kyndra Monteith had 13 digs and three service aces. Makaeli Johnson had 13 digs.

Perry Meridian dropped to 8-8.

Playing their third match in as many night, the Dragons (19-0, 2-0) take on Pendleton Heights (12-9, 0-3) in a Hoosier Heritage Conference match tonight at NPHS. The JV match begins at 6.

Marauders suffer first loss

No. 11 Center Grove scored the game’s only goal on a penalty kick, after a Mt. Vernon handball in the box, with only 12 minutes to go to defeat No. 20 Mt. Vernon 1-0 Wednesday at Center Grove High School.

The Marauders are 7-1-3 on the season. Center Grove improved to 9-2.

Mt. Vernon hosts No. 13 East Central (8-1-1) Wednesday.

Boys tennis

New Pal earns HHC win

New Palestine’s boys tennis team, with just one Hoosier Heritage Conference match remaining, improved to 6-0 in league play and 12-2 overall with a 5-0 win over visiting New Castle Wednesday.

The Dragons won a pair of straight set matches in doubles.

Moses Haynes and Max Havel lost just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Andrew Hahn and Carson Rush gave up just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win.

The singles matches were much closer.

At No. 1, Arjomand Khokhar won 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2, Joey McPike was victorious 6-4, 6-3 and at No. 3, in three sets, Brady Torzewski won 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

New Palestine returns to action Thursday with a home match against Triton Central.

The final HHC contest is Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Mt. Vernon.

Cougars defeat Arabians

Greenfield-Central’s boys tennis team improved to 10-3 overall and 3-3 in the Hoosier Heritage Conference with a 4-1 victory over visiting Pendleton Heights Wednesday.

The Cougars swept singles matches in straight sets and split a pair of three-set doubles contests.

At No. 1 singles, Nathan Roberts won 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2, Alex Michalek was triumphant 6-0, 6-1. No. 3 singles Luke Sitzman won 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Nolan Frye and Kasen Jarnecke were victorious 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Ethan Ortwein and Jacob Welch lost 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (1).

The Cougars travel to Alexandria today.

Marauders down Flashes

Mt. Vernon’s boys tennis team defeated Franklin Central 4-1 at Mt. Vernon High School Wednesday.

The Marauders return to Hoosier Heritage Conference play today with a home contest against New Castle.
