Free, live music coming to outdoor venues

GREENFIELD – Grab a camping chair and head to an outdoor venue this September for a free outdoor concert.

This Saturday, Sept. 21, Depot Street Park in downtown Greenfield will host 7 Bridges, an Eagles tribute, with opening act Hired Guns Bande.

In New Palestine, local oldies tribute group 45 RPM perform at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 on East Main Street.

The Blues, Beer & BBQ series continues in Cumberland Sept. 28, but this time with a rock and roll twist. “Rocktember” features Six Figures, Rockin Horse Band and That ‘90s Band from 6-10 p.m. in downtown Cumberland.

Riley Festival Queen Pageant this Sunday

GREENFIELD – Watch the crowning of a queen this weekend.

The Riley Festival Queen Pageant takes place at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 at the H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts, 122 W. Main St., Greenfield. Contestants will be judged on interview, poise, personality and application forms. The queen and her court are at the Riley Festival Oct. 3-6, featured in parades and throughout festivities. Chalkfest set for Saturday

GREENFIELD — “Life is a Jungle” is the theme of the annual Chalkfest coming to downtown Greenfield.

Set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 in the downtown Living Alley on North Street, the event encourages chalking for a chance to win prizes.

Walk-up registration is accepted; chalk will be provided at the alley or bring your own. Cost is $5-$15. The event is hosted by Hancock County Arts. Learn more or register in advance at hancockcountyarts.org.

Pirate-themed concert coming to HCPL

GREENFIELD — Practice your skills learned from Talk Like a Pirate Day and bring the whole family for a folk concert featuring local musicians, Hogeye Navvy at the Hancock County Public Library.

Hogeye Navvy is an Indianapolis-based Irish, Scottish, and North American traditional music band. They will perform many favorites, especially sea chanteys with audience participation. Pirate garb is not required, but encouraged.

The free event is at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the central library, 900 W. McKenzie Road, Greenfield. Register at hcplibrary.org.

New nature center to open soon

Greenfield – The new Thornwood Nature Center will open this Friday.

Greenfield Parks and Recreation will have a celebration at 11 a.m. Sept. 20 at 1707 S. Morristown Pike, Greenfield.

Join the Parks Department, the Mayor of Greenfield, Guy Titus, and the Greenfield Area Chamber of Commerce, for this next evolution of Thornwood Preserve. There will be refreshments immediately after.

The nature center will be open to the public the next day.
