The town of Cumberland is holding a hearing Wednesday concerning proposed changes to GEM Wastewater Utility rates which affect some New Palestine residents.

The current rate for GEM customers is $78/month. The proposal would increase that rate on Jan. 1 of each of the next three years: In 2025 to $93.60, in 2026 to $112.32 and in 2027 to $134.78.

Customers of the town of Cumberland’s main Waste Water Territory have a lower rate than GEM customers already at $44.20 per month plus an additional charge of $4.63 per 100 cubic feet after 400. Based on numbers from the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American household produces just under 105 cubic feet of wastewater, so most customers would pay only the base rate.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.
