Prep roundup: Late goal gives Mt. Vernon tie with Lawrence North

Kylie Brandes scored a goal in the 79th minute to give Mt. Vernon’s girls soccer team a 1-1 tie with visiting Lawrence North Monday.

The Marauders remain unbeaten on the season with a 5-0-3 record. Lawrence North is 4-3-2. The Wildcats goal came in the first half.

Brandes has scored at least one goal in four straight games and has seven for the season. She has had either a goal or an assist in seven of the team’s eight matches.

Ava Stephenson had four saves.

The Marauders travel to New Palestine Wednesday for a matchup between last year’s co-Hoosier Heritage Conference champions.

Mt. Vernon is 3-0 this season in HHC contests. New Palestine is 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

For the Sept. 11 matchup, New Palestine will honor local first responders at 6:30 p.m., in between the junior varsity and varsity games. All local first responders will be admitted free of charge.

Girls golf

New Palestine defeats Fishers

New Palestine’s girls golf team defeated Fishers 184-203 at Purgatory Golf Course Monday.

New Pal’s Katie Kelley was match medalist with a 39. Lauren Deering shot a 45. Lily Kirchner and Matti Tiede-White each carded 50s.

The Dragons are just outside the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association Top 20 poll. They are one of six teams listed as honorable mention in the rankings released Monday.

New Palestine competes at their home course Wednesday, The Links, against Richmond.
